FOOTBALL ROUNDUP
Both Fishermen teams were involved in entertaining season openers Friday night.
Astoria squandered a three touchdown first half lead, holding on to defeat Molalla 28-27. The Indians had a chance to send the game into overtime after Onisefor Kutsev scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with 1:05 to play in the game. But the visitors went for the 2-point conversion and the win, as junior quarterback Joshua Haqq's play-action pass to the corner of the end zone bounced off the hands of a wide open receiver. Molalla, primarily a running team the last few years, gained 283 of their 394 total yards through the air, with Haqq completing 25 of 44 pass attempts with three interceptions and two touchdowns. Talented tight end John Berokoff caught ten balls for 136 yards and a touchdown, eclipsing his total receptions for the 2005 season in one night.
Astoria had just 209 yards of offense, but capitalized on big plays. Sophomore sensation Jordan Poyer returned an interception 23 yards for a touchdown on the second play of the game, Andy Murray scored on a 30-yard touchdown run on the second play of the second quarter and Poyer found Brent Culver for a 34-yard touchdown pass on the next Astoria series. Senior Nathan Stinnett, who alternated series at quarterback with Poyer, capped the Astoria scoring with a 40-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Thomas Jaworski ran for what turned out to be a game-deciding two point conversion.
The Ilwaco Fishermen and Wahkiakum Mules played a wild back-and-forth affair at Peterson Field. The Mules scored a touchdown in the final minute of regulation to send the game into overtime tied at 34-34, then countered Ilwaco's touchdown with a TD and two point conversion in the Kansas Plan tiebreaker for a 42-40 victory. Ilwaco's junior running back Eddie Knick, an all-state performer in '05, is already a quarter of the way to his third consecutive 1000 yard season after rushing for 242 yards on 20 carries, including touchdown runs of 38 and 80 yards. Wahkiakum's Brenden McClain scored the second of his two touchdowns on a 22 yard overtime run to tie the game at 40-all. Klaus Sorensen ran in for the game-deciding conversion. The two teams combined for over 750 yards of offense.
In other opening night action...Seaside held on to defeat Cascade 24-19, Rainier walloped Knappa 41-0 and Jewell fell at Camas Valley 80-34.
