COMETS ADVANCE TO DISTRICT SEMIS
The Naselle volleyball team defeated its K-M Mountain rival Wahkiakum 20-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-11 at Winlock Wednesday night to advance to the 2B District IV semifinals.
The Comets will play Mossyrock Saturday at noon following the Vikings victory over Pe Ell.
Sylvia Herrold led the way with 22 kills for the Comets, followed by Cheryl Steppe with seven kills and Kellyn Pakenen with six.
"We started off pretty slow," said Comets head coach Debbie Denny. "They took it to us in game one. We played tight and on our heels, then we just kind of squeaked out game two.
"We got some momentum going. Kellyn Pakenen said in game four, 'OK this is enough. We're playing well, let's take it to 'em and get out of here.' We took it to them pretty well and were up 15-5 at one point.
Naselle and Mossyrock met in a non-league match earlier in the season, won by the Comets in four games.
"They've improved and we can play better ball as usual," said Denny. "It should be a good match between the two of us."
Five teams from District IV will advance to the state tournament the following weekend in Cheney.
