FISHERMEN TRIUMPH AT HALL OF FAME INVITE

On a day when two Astoria teams and two former swimmers were honored for their induction into Astoria's Athletic Hall of Fame, the current Astoria swim teams picked up a pair of victories at a 5-team meet at the Aquatic Center.

Avenging a dual meet loss to the Cheesemakers last week, the Astoria boys edged Tillamook 375-to-370 with Rainier coming in third place with 252 points. The Fishermen girls also won by a hair, outpointing Seaside 365-to-351 with Rainier placing third with 238 points. Seaside boys claimed fourth place with 109 points. Toledo High School, which will compete in the District 1 Meet, finished fifth in the boys and fourth in the girls race.

The highlight of the meet for Astoria was the performance of the 200 and 400 girls freestyle relay teams. The quartet of seniors Rachel Gascoigne and Wendi Agalzoff and juniors Meredith Barnes and Bridget Nurding set new school records in the events, completing the 200 in 1:49.29 and the 400 in 4:02.83. Each swimmer also came away with an individual event win, with Nurding taking first in both the 50 freestyle (27.41) and 100 butterfly (1:08.41).

Astoria junior Eddie Duret took home a pair of firsts in the boys 200 freestyle (2:01.93) and 500 freestyle (5:34.79).

Seaside's Laura Coddington took first place in the 100 backstroke and swam lead on the Seagulls' first place 200 medley relay team.

David Erickson and Lynn Chamberlain are the first swimming inductees into the Astoria Hall of Fame. Both were honored with the raising of banners at the Aquatic Center and banners commemorating the 1988-1990 Astoria boys teams were also raised.

Astoria hosts the 4A District 1 Championships once again this year, with preliminary heats beginning at 1:00 p.m. next Friday, Feb. 9 and the championship faces starting at 1:00 p.m. the following day.
