TUESDAY ROUNDUP

BASEBALL
Warrenton 34-26, Neah-Kah-Nie 0-0 (both games 5 innings)...The Warriors outhit the Pirates 37-to-1 on the way to a doubleheader sweep at Rockaway. Nathan Massey hit his fifth home run of the season and Billy Sturgell hit home run number three and Dan Wolfe (3 IP, 6 K's) and Michael Moore (2 IP, 2 K's) combined on a five-inning no-hitter. Eric Gantenbein got the win in game two with three innings of no-hit ball with seven strikeouts and hit three of Warrenton's eight doubles in the win. The Warriors committed just one error over the ten innings, while the Pirates werre charged with 14 errors...In other Lewis & Clark League action, Clatskanie swept a home doubleheader with Catlin Gabel, winning 18-0 and 14-0 in a pair of five-inning games to maintain its one-game lead over Warrenton in the standings. The two teams square off in a key doubleheader at Clatksnaie on Friday. Rainier kept pace with a doubleheader sweep of Vernonia (10-0 and 14-0 in five innings).
Knappa 2, Gaston 1...Gary Aho broke a 1-all tie with a solo home run in the sixth inning as the Knappa Loggers picked up a huge road win at Gaston. Aho outduelled hard-throwing righthander Cody Fassold on the mound, helping his own cause with three hits and both Knappa runs. The Knappa lefthanded ace tossed a complete game two-hitter, striking out 14 in the win. Aho singled and scored on a Joe Strickland triple to get the Loggers on the board in the first inning. The third place Loggers are now 7-5, a game-and-a-half ahead of Corbett in the 2A Special District 1 standings heading into Friday's home doubleheader against Portland Christian. The Loggers (12-7 overall) must sweep both games over the Royals (7-2, 14-4) to have any hope of moving up in the standings.
Castle Rock 7, Ilwaco 5...Anthony Wirkkala continued to get little support from the rest of his teammates as the Fishermen committed six errors in a game one loss to the Rockets in a rare game at Rutherford Field. Wirkkala struck out six and hit a home run in the sixth inning. The senior righthanded pitcher and shortstop also hit a home run in game two of the doubleheader, however the teams were unable to complete five innings before darkness fell. Ilwaco led 6-4 when the game was called four pitches into the bottom of the fifth inning with Castle Rock the designated home team. The team's must complete the game before Monday when the S.W. Washington 1A District playoffs begin.

SOFTBALL
Astoria 9, Seaside 0...Kelly Roman went 3-for-4 at the plate with four runs scored and two RBI's and Alex Hillard tossed a complete game 3-hit shutout with eight strikeouts as the Fishermen blanked the Gulls to sweep the season series three games to none. Hillard contibuted three hits on offense and Shelby Haskell went 2-for-5 with three RBI's as Astoria outhit Seaside 12-to-3 and played error-free in the field. The Fishermen host the Tillamook Cheesemakers in a key doubleheader at 4:00 p.m. Friday with a chance to jump past the Mooks into third place in the Cowapa League standings with a sweep. Tillamook upset Yamhill-Carlton 2-1 Tuesday, handing the 3rd-ranked Tigers their first league loss while Banks continued a recent surge with a 1-0 upset victory over Scappoose in a game that took ten innings to complete.
Warrenton 11-13, Neah-Kah-Nie 0-2...Chelsea Neahring and Brooklyn Campbell each picked up victories and Ashley Poole hit a pair of doubles in game two as the Warriors swept the Pirates at Rockaway.
Knappa 14, Gaston 12...Kate Shear went 5-for-5 at the plate with five RBI's and Danielle Donayri struck out seven batters and had three hits and two runs batted in as the Loggers defeated the Greyhounds in a slugfest at Gaston. Knappa outhit Gaston 17-11, scoring seven runs on eight hits in the fifth inning to take a 13-3 lead. The Greyhounds kept the game alive with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and plated two runs in a seventh inning rally to draw within two before Donayri recorded the final two outs for the win. Third place Knappa (6-5 2A Special District 1, 11-7) still trails Gaston by two games in the standings, with a half-game lead over Corbett (4-4, 9-9). Knappa hosts Wahkiakum in a non-league game on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
Ilwaco 3-0, Castle Rock 13-15...Ilwaco dropped to 0-8 in Trico Division and 1-11 overall with a pair of mercy-rule shortened losses at Castle Rock. Game two was halted after three innings by the 15-run rule.

TRACK AND FIELD-Cowapa League Dual at Astoria
BOYS: Seaside 75, Astoria 70...Seaside's Dennis Olstedt (15.38) edged Astoria's Kyle McMullen (15.68) in a closely contested race in the high hurdles. Olstedt also outpaced McMullen by just under a second in the intermediate hurdle race with a time of 40.12. The Seaside senior also added a win in the long jump (20-4 1/2) and the Gulls won both relays to nip the Fishermen in dual scoring. A key win for the Gulls came in the shot put, with Bjorn McCord recording a season-best 51-0 1/4 to go along with a first place in the discus (141-3 1/2). Astoria's Alex Whitaker took second and third respectively. Astoria's Steven Wentworth defeated Justin Krieger in the 200 and 400 meters in a pair of close races, defeating Krieger by 6/100ths of a second in the 200 (23.4). Freshman Cole Willyard of Seaside defeated Ross McDougall of Astoria by less than a second in the 3000 meters (10:05.21) in another key victory for the Gulls.
GIRLS: Seaside 79, Astoria 66...Astoria's Charlene Harber won three events, including a school record triple jump of 35'-3 1/2", but the Seagulls' Ashley Mayfield won four events as Seaside defeated Astoria. Harber also put up her best marks of the season in the 100 meters (12.84) and the long jump (17-4) to lead the Lady Fishermen. Harber's triple jump mark is the second best in 4A this season in only the third competitive meet in which the Astoria sophomore has entered this event. Harber's long jump mark ranks third in the state in the 4A classification. The Seagulls girls won both relay events to complete a co-ed sweep, while Mayfield added firsts in the 400 (1:03.4), 800 (2:32.9) and 1500 meters (5:30.31).

BOYS GOLF-Cowapa League Dual at Gearhart Golf Links
Seaside 339, Banks 355...Devan Flukinger shot a 7-over 79 to lead the Seagulls to a victory in their final Cowapa League dual match of the season. Chris Olson was three strokes back at 82 and Thomas Moore led the Braves with an 85. The Gulls now prepare for the 4A District 1 Tournament, which begins Monday with 18 holes at Quail Valley in Banks and concludes the next day at Gearhart Golf Links.
