FISHERMEN EDGE LOGGERS IN OJB OPENER
The Astoria Fishermen jumped right into summer ball, exactly one week after ending their spring scholastic season with a 4-3 loss at La Grande in the 4A state semifinals.
Featuring an entirely new outfield and two members of the vaunted Babe Ruth 15-year-old All-Star team making their varsity debuts, Astoria edged Knappa 3-0 at Teevin Field.
In a high profile pitching matchup, Astoria's Jordan Poyer, a 1st-team All-State outfielder, outdueled 2A Player Of the Year Gary Aho.
Aho, admittedly rustier after a long layoff, fanned seven Fishermen batters in a 4 1/3 inning stint, but some first inning wildness proved costly.
"We showed a little bit of rust," said Knappa head coach Jeff Miller. "Unfortunately we didn't shake it off the bats today."
Poyer and reliever Hans Lund combined for 14 strikeouts in the win. Poyer recorded his first eight and ten of his first eleven outs with strikeouts. Knappa was able to put runners on base in each of the first three innings, advancing to second and third in the first frame, but Poyer got out of jams with K's.
"He's gotten better," said Ryker Thornton, who will manage the Astoria Ford OJB team most of the summer. "Since his last Scappoose outing [a one-hit shutout] at the end of the year he's gotten better. His curve ball has got more movement and he's living down with the fastball. He's just gotten better every time out. To replace a guy like [4A State Player of the Year Matt] Brause, that's the kind of guy he has to be."
Astoria's high octane offense lost five all-Cowapa League starters and this summer's team, held to six hits in their first game, will have to find new ways to score runs with more than half of the teams 34 home runs lost to graduation.
"It was nice to see our hitters get humbled early on in the summer," said Astoria coach Ryker Thornton, who piloted the Fishermen along with Glen Fromwiller and Ralph Steinback.
The Fishermen accepted some charity in the first inning. Lund got aboard with a one-out base hit. After Aho retired Poyer on a fly ball to left, the Knappa lefthander lost his way, walking Mason Brause and hitting Sam Johnson with a pitch to load the bases. Lund scampered home on a passed ball for the first run of the game. Aho reloaded the bases with a walk issued to sophomore-to-be Marcus Brown before striking out Jared Rummell to end the threat.
The score remained 1-0 until the seventh inning, as both pitchers flirted with runners on base, but used strikeouts and in Knappa's case, a pair of double plays in the fifth and sixth innings to keep it close.
"Not a bad performace against a good team," said Miller. "Hopefully we build on it and continue to shake the rust off and have a good summer."
Poyer fanned Knappa's Joe Strickland, a 2nd-team All-State catcher, with runners on second and third and two outs in the fifth inning, ending his mound stint with a career-high 12 strikeouts. Lund allowed a 2-out ground rule double to Nate West in the sixth inning, but retired five of the six batters he faced for the save.
Astoria finally got a little breathing room, taking advantage of some shoddy Logger defense to plate two more runs off reliever Karac Anderson in the seventh inning.
Lund started the rally with a well-placed bloop double down the right field line that eluded the glove of the onrushing Nate West. Poyer followed with a grounder to the hole at shortstop. Cody Strickland knocked the ball down on the dive, but threw wildly to third trying to nab Lund. Lund raced home and Poyer went all the way to third base when the throw to the plate bounced awry. Rummell completed the scoring with a two-out RBI single, scoring the pinch-running Marc Gallegos, the only incoming freshman on Astoria-s summer roster.
Lund, now batting second in the Fishermen order, went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored for the Fishermen. Poyer, batting third, added two hits in four at bats. Senior-to-be Sam Johnson, starting at catcher, reached base three times on a base on balls and a pair of hit-by-pitches.
Knappa heads to Rainier on Thursday for a 5:00 p.m. doubleheader.
