CLOSE, BUT FIRST WIN ELUDES ILWACO

The Fishermen put up a valiant effort, but fell just shy of recording their first victory of the 2006 football campaign, dropping a tough non-conference tilt to Ridgefield, 19-14 at Peterson Field Friday night.

In a first half that showcased both defenses, Ilwaco jumped to the advantage late in the second quarter when freshman sensation Rey Sanchez stepped in front of a screen pass from the Spudder's QB Sean Jung and gave Ilwaco great field position in Ridgefield territory with just over 2 minutes left in the first half.

The Fishermen pounded the ball down the field, punching it in from 6 yards out on the legs of Eddy Knick with just :12 remaining in the first half. With the two-point conversion pass completion from Jake Nesbitt to Jordan DeSimone, the homestanding Fishermen took a 8-0 lead to the break.

That lead grew to 14-0 midway through the 3rd quarter, when Knick again scored, this time taking the pitch from Nesbitt, stiff-arming a Spudder defender, and racing down the sideline 53 yards for the score. The two-point conversion failed, but Ilwaco had high hopes and a two touchdown advantage.

But the Spudders came roaring back, helped by three Ilwaco fumbles. The first turnover led to a 7-yard scoring strike from Jung to Tim Horne. The Fishermen blocked the extra point and still held the lead, 14-6 with 4:16 left in the 3rd quarter.

The second Ilwaco fumble also led directly to points for Ridgefield, with George Chechelnitskiy on the receiving end of a Jung pass from 20 yards out on a 3rd down and goal to go for Ridgefield. With the two-point conversion try failing, Ilwaco clung to a slim 14-12 lead heading into the 4th quarter.

The Fishermen defense was running out of gas, however, and Ridgefield took advantage, as RJ Kuehl scampered 20 yards on a sweep with just under 8 minutes to go in the game for the final touchdown for either team.

Ilwaco was led on the ground by Eddy Knick with 21 carries for 123 yards and both Fishermen touchdowns. Nesbitt had a solid game at quarterback, going 10-16 for 104 yards with 1 interception as Ilwaco gained 247 yards in offense. Ridgefield was led by Jung, who completed 8-11 for 109 yards with 2 TD and 1 INT. The Spudders garnered 224 yards in total offense.

Next up for Ilwaco is a Trico Conference matchup with La Center at Peterson Field. Join us for all the action on KAST AM 1370 this Friday night at 6:50 p.m.
