FISH SPIKERS DOMINATE ENDOWMENT OPENER
The Astoria volleyball team completely overmatched Molalla, winning its season opener 25-2, 25-9, 25-15.
The Lady Fishermen looked to be in midseason form from the opening serve by junior libero Sara Cullen, who started the match with a ten point run and three aces. Astoria used just two servers in a dominating game one, while Molalla served just twice in the game. The Indians first serve went for an error and an Astoria side out. Junior Kristen Saulsbury stepped behind the line and rolled off 13 straight points and nearly served out the game before serving long on game point. A back row kill from junior Hilary O'Bryan completed the 25-2 beatdown.
Astoria started out a little slower in games two and three, even falling behind 4-0 in game three. But other than a couple of sputtering starts, the Lady Fishermen looked like a well-oiled machine for most of the match, which took less than one hour to complete.
Senior middle hitter Wendi Agalzoff and junior outside hitter Sophie DeWitt, Astoria's two returning all-leaguers, led a balanced offensive attack with nine kills apiece. Both players appear to have polished their games in the last year, with Agalzoff hitting harder than ever and DeWitt offering an array of attacks, hitting with power and accuracy. Saulsbury had an outstanding floor game, putting away seven kills with some impressive downward angles, serving 19 of 20 points with three aces and providing consistently accurate passes to her teammates. Senior setter Rachel Gascoigne was nearly flawless, recording 22 assists while Cullen was a perfect 20 for 20 on service with three aces.
Astoria will see much tougher teams than Molalla, but yesterday's play was a strong indicator of good things to come for this talented group. The Fishermen had just three attack errors in the first two games of the match and the teamwork and communication were excellent.
Astoria opens Cowapa League play Thursday night at Seaside at 7:00 p.m. The Gulls shared the Cowapa League championship with Tillamook in 2005, but graduated much of their team.
