ILWACO OUTFISHES ASTORIA AGAIN
After a year off, Ilwaco picked up right where it left off in the annual "Battle of the Lady Fishermen".
Anna Kitzman scored 19 of her game-high 25 points in the first half as Ilwaco defeated shorthanded Astoria 40-36 at the Brick House in the season opener for both teams. The senior guard scored all but two of her team's points in the first half, as Ilwaco took a 21-17 lead at intermission. Kitzman had a hand in the other two points as well, feeding Allison Brooks underneath the basket for Ilwaco's 18th point, then drained her third 3-pointer of the quarter on Ilwaco's final possession of the half.
"She's a good player," said Astoria head coach Gordon Thomson. "She really hurt us from the outside tonight."
What hurt Astoria even more was the absence of six varsity players, including several likely starters due to injuries and disciplinary suspensions. The Fishermen played the entire game with only one full substitute available, with sophomore guard Sarah Pope coming off the bench to score three points and clear five rebounds in her varsity debut. Two other players, sophomores Charlene Harber and Dani Stevens, were limited to one quarter after playing in the junior varsity game. Both made brief appearances without scoring.
Kitzman's steal and fast break layup opened the scoring in the second half, but Astoria closed to within two at 23-21 on baskets by Jamie Coggins and Kelly Roman. A 6-0 Ilwaco run, keyed by back to back layups by junior post Lanie Kary gave Ilwaco a 29-21 lead and the visitors led 31-25 heading into the final period after Kitzman nailed a step-back 15-foot jump shot with four seconds left in the quarter.
Coggins helped keep Astoria in the game, scoring nine of her team-high 10 points in the second half. The junior post, an honorable mention all-Cowapa League selection last season, was Astoria's only player on the floor with varsity experience. Returning junior point guard Hilary O'Bryan is still recovering from an ankle injury suffered in the volleyball playoffs and has yet to practice. Kristen Saulsbury (auto accident) and K.J. Carr (calf) are expected to return for Astoria's opening game at the Madras Tournament against Burns next Friday. Two other players should return to the lineup for Astoria's next game.
"I'm pleased with the girls that were here," said Thomson. "I thought defensively they worked pretty hard. They were tired and the first game of the season you're not in great shape. We practiced twice in seven days because of the snow. I liked the effort."
Ilwaco appeared to have the game in hand, regaining a 9-point lead with about two minutes left in the game when Brooks scored off another Kitzman assist to make it 40-31. Ilwaco proceeded to miss five straight free throws down the stretch as Astoria scored on back-to-back buckets by Cristina Wilson to make it 40-35. Coggins rebounded a missed free throw by Bonnie Perez with just under a minute to go, but Wilson was called for an offensive foul on the other end. Astoria put Perez on the line again with :37 seconds left and the Ilwaco point guard missed the first shot and had the second wiped out by a lane violation. Coggins drew a foul with :25 left, hitting one out of two free throws to cut the lead to 40-36 before Astoria called its final time out.
At this point in the game, Wilson and point guard Sara Cullen had each fouled out, leaving Astoria with no substitutes left. Ilwaco inbounded the ball to their best foul shooter Kitzman, who was able to break backcourt pressure thanks to a Perez screen. Kitzman dribbled almost half the clock out before Perez was fouled with :11 left. She missed both free throws, but Astoria ran out of time, as two shots at the basket went for nought.
Wilson, a 5-11 junior post, had a strong varsity debut, pulling down a game-high eight rebounds to go with nine points and four steals. Kelly Roman was 4-for-8 from the field for eight points. Ilwaco's Kary scored all seven of her points in the second half and Brooks was 3-for-3 from the field for six points. Kitzman had four steals and went 10-for-21 from the field, 3-for-10 from beyond the arc.
Ilwaco travels to Knappa Saturday night for a makeup game at 7:30. Astoria hosts Knappa Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. in the first game of an OSAA Endowment doubleheader. The Fishermen boys, who open the season at the Bob McKenzie Memorial Tournament tonight against Skyview of Vancouver, will play Knappa in the nightcap Tuesday night. Both Astoria-Knappa games will be broadcast live on KAST 1370.
