ILWACO GIRLS WIN AT STEVENSON
Anna Kitzman had 22 points and Lanie Kary added 17 as the Ilwaco Lady Fishermen defeated the Stevenson Bulldogs 57-47 Thursday night.
Kalama defeated Columbia 42-32 to remain a half-game ahead of Ilwaco in the Trico League standings.
With three games left, the Lady Fishermen have clinched a district tournament berth and can secure no worse than a number three seed with a win at home Saturday against La Center. The Wildcats defeated Rochester 62-32 to improve to 5-4 in league. Ilwaco and La Center will be meeting for the first time this season after having an early contest postponed by weather.
While the Fishermen have secured a district berth, their sights are set much higher. Kalama plays Castle Rock tonight in the Chinooks fourth game this week. A Rockets win could open the door to a Trico title for the Lady Fishermen if they are able to beat Kalama at home on Tuesday and sweep two games against La Center.
"They lost Tuesday night in a non-league game against Washougal," said Ilwaco head coach Ned Bittner. "They're going to be really tested."
Ilwaco had a 49-25 lead going into the fourth period before Stevenson, coached by former Tenino head coach Jason Suess, fought back to make the score respectable.
Kitzman, topping the 20-point mark for the second consecutive game, added five rebounds, four steals and three assists. Lanie Kary added five rebounds and Melany Bliss had ten boards to go with her eight points.
Saturday's game against La Center tips off at 7:15 p.m. and the Lady Fishermen play Kalama in the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday, following the boys game at 5:45 p.m. (ESPN Radio, boys only). There will be no J.V. games against Kalama on Tuesday. Both teams wrap up the regular season against La Center later in the week.
"The last two years, we usually play well at the districts," said Bittner. "Right now, we're playing better than we usually do going into districts. If this team can bring it up notch and take it to another level, who knows what can happen?"
Ilwaco's first district playoff will be on Feb. 15 and will be broadcast live on SportsRadio 1230 ESPN.
