MOOKS SHAVE FISH IN COWAPA OPENER
With four golfers within four strokes of each other, the Tillamook Cheesemakers defeated Astoria 336-345 in the Cowapa League dual match opener for both teams at Astoria Golf and Country Club.
If not for a rough front nine by Mark Lehman, five Mooks may have shot between 82 and 86 on a rare pleasant early April day on the coastal course.
"It was very nice," said Astoria boys golf coach Dan Foss. "A pleasant change. I haven’t seen such benign conditions out there in a long time."
Colby Anderson shot an 82 to lead the Cheesemakers, followed by Nathan Benthin (83), Chris Merritt (85) and Jason Dorsey (86). Lehman recovered from a front nine 53 to shoot 42 on the back for a total of 95.
Match medal honors went to Astoria junior Alex Ferber, who shot a sizzling 33 on the back nine for a 76 to win by six strokes.
"I was pleased with Alex's round," said Foss. He had one bad hole on the front nine or it could have been a lot better for him."
Scores were lower across the board on the second nine because the teams did not play the 14th hole while the green was being serviced.
Also scoring for Astoria: Craig Folgner 46-42-88, Cody Voeller 50-40-90, Jon Natividad 52-39-91, Thomas Barbic 49-45-104.
"It's still early in the season," said Foss. "This was our first league match. It gives us a barometer of where we’re at. We will go back and analyze our games."
Astoria's next league match is at home a week from Thursday against Banks.
This was the first match for the team since a spring break trip to Bandon, where the team played the nationally top-rated Bandon Dunes and Pacific Dunes courses last Monday and Tuesday
"I'd been communicating with the people down there and working on getting a junior rate," said Foss. "They called a month ago and said, 'Coach, bring them down, we’ll cover them.' What a thrill for these guys! Potentially a once in a lifetime experience for some of these kids. We had a blast. It was just a classy fun event. We do a spring break trip every year. I’m glad they threw in the coach, too."
With Seaside graduating its senior led league champion team from 2006, the doors are open to several teams to contend for a Cowapa League title on the links.
"I think Scappoose is the team to beat," said Foss. "Seaside is coming off our Fish Invite victory. We’ve got our work cut out for us. We’ve got a month to prepare for district and pare down those wayward shots. It could come down to a couple of strokes at district."
As for district medalist, Astoria should have at least one dog in that hunt.
"Alex is definitely a candidate for districts," said Foss. "Devan Flukinger at Seaside, who transferred from our school. There’s a couple of kids from Scappoose who are pretty tough too. Marcus Kienlen. Neal Hammond, a sophomore from Banks. Weston Powers and Ethan Stirling from Scappoose. Those are the big guns."
The district tournament opening round is at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks on May 7th with the final round at Gearhart Golf Links the following day. The state championships will once again be at Eagle Crest Resort in Redmond the following weekend.
The defending league champion Seagulls picked up a three stroke win at Scappoose, defeating the Indians 360 to 363 at Wildwood Golf Course
Seaside freshman Evan Jiroudek shared medalist honors with Scappoose's Marcus Kienlen, shooting a 46-49-85. Devan Flukinger was two strokes back with an 87
The best score of the day came in the JV match, where Scappoose's Gage Josi shot an 84, which would have given the Indians varsity a team win.
"Evan coming along and getting medalist honors is huge," said Seagulls head coach Jim Poetsch. "He birdied 12 and chipped in from 50-yards out on another hole. The chips helped us and might have deflated them a little bit. Two matches in a row he’s shot in the thirties and been the best golfer on the backside."
The Gulls have a busy week next week, heading to the Madras Invitational on Tuesday before taking part in the Central Coast Classic, a two day tournament that starts at Sandpines on Thursday and concludes at Salishan on Saturday.
