ILWACO WINS GOLF INVITATIONAL AT SURFSIDE
The Ilwaco Fishermen took first place at their own 5-team invitational on Saturday with a team score of 324, 24 strokes ahead of second place Stevenson.
Ilwaco's Jack Whealdon was tournament medalist with a 77, two strokes ahead of teammate Todd Oakes. Stevenson's Tyler Nielson took third with an 80, followed by another Ilwaco golfer, Tyler Johnson with 81.
"Tyler Johnson was a great surprise," said head coach Dan Whealdon, whose Fishermen host La Center in a dual match on Tuesday. "It was the lowest competitive round he's had."
"An east wind blew, which was a little different at Surfside. It threw them off a little bit."
After Tuesday's match with La Center, which placed fourth with a score of 370, behind R.A. Long (353) and ahead of Northwest Christian (380), Ilwaco travels to Stevenson for a dual on Friday, then on to Heron Lakes for the 17-team Prairie Invitational on Saturday.
