ASTORIA WRESTLERS LOSE OPENING DUAL
With a strong core of returners augmented by two highly-regarded transfers, Scappoose's wrestling team will look to contend for a Cowapa League and District 1 title this season.
The Indians began their run with a 57-12 dual meet victory at home over Astoria Wednesday night, the Cowapa League opener for both teams.
Junior Ryland Geiger, a Scappoose native who returned to the community this season, was the national champion Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestler in his weight class. The 189-pounder had no trouble with Astoria sophomore novice Mason Brause, but the Indians second-rated 160-pounder got all he could handle from Astoria's Josh Banta, who is ranked third in Oregon. The match went down to the wire with Toledo transfer Caleb Pendleton decisioning Banta 6-5.
"We didn't get some calls we wish he had," said Astoria head coach Cam McFarland. "It was a very well-wrestled match by both guys. Takedowns and reversals is what it came down to."
The Fishermen picked up a win by Kenny Dowell at 112 pounds, and Tim Clark recorded a reversal and two near falls to come back and defeat his opponent by one point in the 152-pound match.
Scappoose's Cole Miller won a tight match at 171 against Josh Banta, while Jake Banta picked up his first league win courtesy of a forfeit at 215 pounds.
Colton Schwartz, stepping up to varsity to wrestle at heavyweight for Astoria, also wrestled a tight match with Scappoose's Jimmy Martinez.
Astoria heads to the Junction City Invitational this Saturday. Seaside opens Cowapa League competition with a match at Tillamook tonight.
