WARRENTON EDGES ASTORIA IN FRIDAY TOURNEY
This was billed as the Clatsop County Championships, although South County was not represented in Friday's 3-way meet at Astoria.
In a meet rescheduled after January snow, the best wrestlers from Astoria, Warrenton and Knappa high schools met at Astoria on Friday, with Warrenton coming out on top in a close battle with Astoria.
Eight Warriors wrestlers took home first place finishes, while the Fishermen had four first places and five runners-up.
Knappa's only champion came in the heavyweight division, with John Benthin pinning Astoria's Ben Mattingly in the second period.
Astoria put two wrestlers in the 103-pound final, with Dusty Morrison decisioning Kenny Dowell 6-4. Two Warrenton wrestlers squared off for the 171-pound title with Tyler Collier defeating Jimmy Bechtel 6-2.
"It would have been nice if Seaside had shown up," said Astoria head coach Cam McFarland. "It would have put some more kids on the table and made it more competitive."
Seaside was to participate in the original tournament, scheduled Jan. 13, but postponed by snow. The Gulls chose not to compete in the rescheduled tournament.
"I just have to say what a great job Coach Pike and Coach Wolfe at Warrenton did in working with Howard Rub to put this thing together," said McFarland.
All of the teams will be engaged in their district championship meets next weekend. The Cowapa League meet will be at Tillamook, Warrenton will head to Clatskanie for the 3A Special District 1 Championships, while 2A Knappa's district meet is at Santiam High School in Mill City.
In other wrestling news...Ilwaco qualified three wrestlers for next weekend's regional meet in Castle Rock. Jason Schule defeated John Roden of Castle Rock 4-1 to win the Trico League title in Saturday's subdistrict meet at Kalama. Geoff Hylton (215) and Ikaika Thomas (285) also qualified with second and third place finishes respectively. Castle Rock dominated the meet, winning the team title with 410 points. Ilwaco finished last out of seven teams with 60 points.
