WEEKEND ROUNDUP
Naselle 4, Tacoma Baptist 0 (3 innings)...Matt Blain dominated on the mound and picked up a double at the plate as the Comets advanced to the 2B District IV Baseball Tournament with a victory Saturday in a playoff tiebreaker at Olympic Stadium in Hoquiam. In a tie with North Beach and Tacoma Baptist for the final district berth, Naselle drew a bye in the first round of Saturday's mini-playoff, as the Crusaders demolished North Beach 13-3 in the first round. Blain handcuffed TB over the 3-inning game, allowing no hits and striking out six batters. Matt Chavez went 2-for-2 at the plate for Naselle, which will play an opponent to be determined on Tuesday.
Portland Christian 9-12, Knappa 8-3...Needing a sweep over the Royals to improve their playoff positioning, the Loggers lost a heartbreaker in game one as Eric Tolleson doubled over the head of centerfielder Karac Anderson to score Charlie Antal with the go-ahead run with two outs in the seventh inning. Gary Aho took the loss in relief after tying the score with a 385-foot leadoff solo home run to centerfield in the sixth inning, his third home run of the game. Charlie Antal tossed three innings to pick up the win in relief of starter Jesse Severson, who gave up ten hits and six runs, three earned, over four innings. Antal struck out the side in the seventh inning to close out the game. Three Knappa pitchers walked nine batters in the game, compared to two bases on balls allowed by the Royals. Aho, who entered the doubleheader batting .631 on the season, finished 3-for-4 at the plate in game one with five runs batted in. Maury Dugan also went 3-for-4 for the Loggers and Greg Thompson was 3-for-4 with 3 RBI's for the Royals and Tolleson went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. The Royals continued their late momentum to earn the doubleheader and season sweep over the Loggers and now trail first place Nestucca by just a half game in the 2A Special District 1 standings following the Bobcats doubleheader split against Corbett.
Astoria 9, Seaside 1...The Fishermen are one win away from matching the school-record winning streak set in the 2006 championship season. Astoria will be a heavy favorite to pick up win number 18 in a row when the Fishermen head to Tillamook to take on the Cheesemakers. Tillamook nearly upset Yamhill-Carlton for the second time this year, falling 6-5 at home to the Tigers on Friday. Scappoose defeated Banks 10-2. Seaside dropped to 5-5 in the Cowapa League and 10-10 overall with Friday's loss. The Gulls are currently in fourth place, a half-game behind third place Yamhill-Carlton. Seaside hosts Banks at 5:00 p.m. at Broadway Field.
Castle Rock 9, Ilwaco 6...The Rockets defeated the Fishermen Friday morning in the resumption of a game suspended by darkness earlier in the week. When play began Friday, Ilwaco had a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. No scores were reported for Ilwaco's doubleheader at Stevenson on Friday.
SOFTBALL
Tillamook 5-14, Astoria 1-2...The Cheesemakers shattered any playoff pretensions for Astoria with an emphatic sweep at Niemi Field on Friday. Yamhill-Carlton split a doubleheader with Scappoose, winning game one 13-3 and losing game two 11-4. Scappoose, Y-C and Tillamook have locked up the three state playoff berths from the Cowapa League with two playing dates remaining. Astoria closes out its season this week with a Tuesday home game against Scappoose and a doubleheader at Banks Friday.
Clatskanie 9-10, Warrenton 0-1...The Tigers swept the season series from Warrenton and now prepare for a Tuesday doubleheader at home against rival Rainier. The Columbians and Tigers are tied atop the Lewis & Clark League standings at 7-1 with Vernonia two games back at 5-3. Warrenton dropped to 3-7 with the loss and 5-11 overall.
Wahkiakum 3, Knappa 1...Shelby Deaton outduelled Danielle Donayri as the Mules defeated the Loggers in a non-league pitcher's duel at Knappa Friday. Deaton fanned nine batters and allowed two hits and four walks. Donayri also struck out nine with three hits allowed. A two-out error in the third inning led to two Wahkiakum runs as the Mules took a 2-1 lead. Deaton gave herself an insurance run with an RBI single in the sixth, scoring Courtney Helms. Knappa's only run was unearned with Kelsey Patterson going all the way to third base on a strike out wild pitch and errant throw by the Wahkiakum catcher. Donayri plated Patterson with a ground out. The Loggers, now 11-8 overall, travel to Warrenton for a non-league game on Monday.
Stevenson 9-19, Ilwaco 7-10...The Lady Fishermen dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Stevenson Friday to drop to 1-13 on the season.
Banks 2-10, Seaside 0-0 (Game Two, 5 innings)...The Gulls remained winless in the Cowapa League, dropping to 3-20 overall.
BOYS GOLF-Egbers Invitational at Skagit Valley Golf Course in Burlington, WA
Ilwaco sophomore Jack Whealdon shot a 36-hole 155 to take 17th place out of 116 players at the prestigious tournament featuring many of the state's top high school golfers. T.J. Bordeaux of Bellarmine Prep in Tacoma won the event, while Kamiak High School of Mukilteo won the team title. Ilwaco, the second smallest school with entries, sent three boys to the tournament. Todd Oakes missed the cut by a stroke with an 80 on the first day, while Whealdon shot a 76 in the first round, including two-under par on the back nine. Tyler Johnson carded a 94 on the first day of the event.
