WARRIORS SWEEP CLATSKANIE
The Warrenton Warriors took advantage of a rusty Clatskanie Tigers squad to sweep a pair of non-league games in Oregon Junior action Tuesday.
A 13-run third inning that saw 16 men come to the plate helped Warrenton to a 15-4 win in game one. Game two went an extra frame as Warrenton tied the score with two runs in the seventh and scored three more in the top of the eighth to pull out a 10-7 victory over the Tigers.
Clatskanie, playing only its third game of the summer and missing three starters, is playing a non-league probationary schedule this season to qualify for full inclusion in the North Coast League next season according to Warrenton head coach and league commissioner Lennie Wolfe.
"This was only their second or third game of the summer and it looked like it," said Wolfe. "We went out and did what we should have done and it was good."
Down 3-0 entering the third inning of game one, Warrenton's first two batters struck out before Michael Moore drew a walk. Brandon Slaughter followed with the first of his two home runs on the day to begin a 13-run scoring barrage that put the game well out of reach.
KC Taylor was charged with seven of the runs and Conrad Ritchie came on in relief and could not stop the bleeding.
"Their pitchers were not sharp," said Wolfe.
Michael and Kevin Moore, Buddy Davis and Billy Kerr all had two hits in the game.
After a double and a home run in game one, Kevin Moore added two more hits in the second game, including an RBI double in the eighth inning to bring home the go-ahead run.
Cody Patterson led off the eighth with his second hit of the game, then stole second. With two outs, Davis walked and Moore followed with a double to right centerfield. Billy Sturgell followed with a two-run double down the leftfield line to add insurance and Billy Kerr pitched a scoreless eighth inning to nail down the win.
Moore also contributed to a 2-run seventh inning, leading off with a walk, later scoring on the second of two Tigers' fielding errors in the inning.
With the game tied at seven, KC Taylor led off the bottom of the seventh inning with his fourth hit of the game. Slaughter, playing in at third base, fielded a bunt from the next batter and threw out Taylor at second before a 6-4-3 double play ended the threat.
Kerr, a freshman, allowed four hits and one earned run over a three inning stint on the mound.
"Billy was by far our most effective kid," said Wolfe, referring to a contingent of pitchers used to preserve innings for a league doubleheader on Thursday, which was later cancelled by Ilwaco as it turns out. "I wasn't unhappy with any of the pitchers really. They all threw strikes and its tough to get any continuity going when you only throw a couple of innings."
Slaughter led off game two with his second home run of the day. Michael Moore cracked a two-run double in the second inning to put the Warriors up 3-0 before Clatskanie responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Taylor doubled in the third and scored on a Cody Pesio groundout to put the Tigers in front, but not for long, as Beau Torres RBI double in the fifth inning put Warrenton back on top 5-4. The Tigers came right back with a two-run Pesio double in the bottom of the inning, adding another run in the sixth to go up 7-5. Luke Meyer's double put runners on second and third in the sixth inning, before the Tigers plated a run on a groundout. Warrenton caught a break when Meyer rounded the bag at third a little to far and Kevin Moore threw across the diamond to pick him off for the final out of the inning.
With Thursday's game against Ilwaco postponed, the Warriors are due to host Seaside on Tuesday for a 4:00 p.m. doubleheader.
