WARRIORS TRIUMPH IN V-BALL OPENER
The Warrenton Warriors volleyball team opened the regular season with a 3-game sweep at Ilwaco, defeating the Fishermen 25-13, 25-13, 25-15.
Returning Lewis & Clark League outside hitter Ashley Poole had a strong all-around game, hitting 10-for-11 with four kills and passing over 80-percent for the Warriors, who swept Ilwaco for the second consecutive season.
Junior Lauren Dove was a strong presence in the middle in her varsity debut, hitting 16-for-21 with a team-leading five kills and eight blocks. Brandi Jasmin hit 13-for-15 with three kills for Warrenton, which returns three starters from last season's state playoff team
Poole, a senior, is Warrenton's best all-around player. The lefthanded leaper is one of the top returning players in the Lewis & Clark League and is Warrenton's strongest outside hitter and passer. Jordane Marxer, a junior 3-year letterwinner, takes over full-time setter duty as Coach Jim Hackwith's Warriors switch to a 5-1 offense after running a 6-2 with Marxer and older sister Justine last season. Jasmin is Warrenton's other starting outside hitter.
Dove bided her time on junior varsity last year behind a deep group of senior frontline players, included the graduated Lesleann Hayward and Emily Ogren. The tall, athletic junior has fully recovered from a scary bout with an eating disorder that cost her all of basketball season and is primed for a breakout season in multiple sports.
Joining the varsity rotation this year are long-limbed junior middle blocker Claire Ogren and senior defensive specialist Jessica Hoffman. Sophomore Brooklyn Campbell, a key contributor in basketball and softball as a frosh last year, will be counted on to play multiple positions as a fulltime starter.
Roberta Kelly came off the bench to produce quality passing numbers for Warrenton Tuesday night (4-for-5).
The Warriors renew a longtime Northwest League rivalry at home against Knappa Thursday night. After nonleague tilts at South Bend next Tuesday and home against Wahkiakum Wednesday, the Warriors open their Lewis & Clark League schedule at home against the defending West Division champion Neah-Kah-Nie Pirates on Sept. 13. The Pirates lost several key players to graduation and are adjusting to a new coach.
East Division champion Oregon Episcopal School went unbeaten and unchallenged during the regular season in 2006 and returns one of the state's top players in all classifications in senior dynamo Libby Morrison, an elite level Division I recruit. Hackwith also predicts Rainier will return with a strong team, although the Columbians also have a new coach this season. Clatskanie should contend for the West Division lead in the 9-team Lewis & Clark League. Hackwith predicts Warrenton will battle in the middle of the pack in a league that is down a bit from last year, with a lot of jockeying for playoff spots.
Last season's labyrinthine league playoff format has been pared down, as only the top six seeds will qualify for the postseason tournament, which begins on Oct. 27.
Warrenton's first regular season tournament comes a week from Saturday at Neah-Kah-Nie. The Warriors will also compete in tournaments at Nestucca (Sep. 22) and Adna (Oct. 20).
