ASTORIA FORD MOTORS TO THIRD IN CORVALLIS

Buoyed by the return of state co-player of the year Mathias Brause, the Astoria Ford Fishermen defeated Sandy 4-3 in eight innings to take third place at an 8-team tournament in Corvallis this weekend.

Brendan Landwehr's RBI double scored Kevin Berry with the game-winning run in the eighth. Berry was recruited to bolster a lineup gutted by the Oregon State football camp and various other distractions and committments.

Down 3-2 in the seventh, Gabe Davis tied the game with and RBI single, scoring Brause.

In danger of losing his first game in more than two months, Brause pitched a scoreless eighth, then added a hit in the final inning to help move the winning run into scoring position. Brause allowed seven hits and struck out seven in the victory.

On Saturday, missing Brause along with several other players, Astoria was destroyed by Yakima, losing 17-1 in five innings. Yakima pounded Lebanon 17-2 in the tournament championship, which took some of the sting out of the loss.

The Fishermen return to Aiken Field Wednesday afternoon for a 4:30 p.m. doubleheader against Oregon City. Then its off to Knappa Thursday for a North Coast District matchup rematch against the Loggers.
