FIRST ACTION FOR ASTORIA BABE RUTH ALL-STARS

The Astoria Babe Ruth All-Star teams got one win each at this weekend's Don Rhoads Memorial Tournament, with only the 15-year-olds reaching single elimination play.

The Astoria 15's defeated Columbia-Cowlitz 9-6 on Saturday, setting up a Sunday morning showdown with tournament top-seed Longview, which had 10-runned all of its opponents in pool play.

Longview went up 3-0 before Astoria scored a run in the fourth inning when Joe Strickland doubled and scored on a Mason Brause RBI single.

It remained a 3-1 ballgame until the final inning, when Longview scored three times on a 1-out double, followed by a pair of bloop singles and an error.

Down 6-1 in their final at bat, the Astoria All-Stars would rally. Brause led off with a double, later scoring on a Kiefer Lucore sacrifice fly. Brady Leach singled and scored on a Nate West single. West would come home on an error. Down 6-4, Astoria had the bases loaded with the tying run in scoring position before the final out was recorded.

The 15-year-old All-Stars will return to Longview for another tournament this Friday. The 14-year-old team will also be in the field of primarily 15-year-old teams.

The highly regarded Astoria 14's had a forgettable start to the summer. The 2-time regional qualifiers won their opener, defeating Port Angeles 12-6 on Friday before running into a Saturday buzzsaw. Centralia smoked Astoria 7-1 before defending Southern Washington champion Kelso blitzed the Coasters 12-0 in five innings. No details were reported by the coaching staff.

The Astoria 13-year-olds just missed the winners' bracket by a hair after losing a tough pair of one-run games. Astoria defeated Port Angeles 10-5 on Friday behind the tough pitching of Taylor Fox. Later in the day, Willamette Valley grabbed an early 7-0 lead but Astoria stormed back with six unanswered runs before running out of time in a 7-6 loss.

Saturday's final game against Longview was almost a carbon copy, as Astoria fell behind 6-nothing early before racking up five runs in the sixth inning, stringing together several hits in a row. This time the preset 2-hour time limit worked in the favor of the locals, as Longview exploded for 11 runs in the seventh inning, but time ran out reverting the score to the previous inning for a 6-5 result.

Head coach Guy Davis praised the defensive play of his outfielders, including Dylan Glover, Skylar Olson and Erik Keating. Olson and Alex Eterno were both 4-for-5 at the plate going into the Longview game.

Davis expects to play the 13-year-old B team in a scrimmage some time this week.
