BABE RUTH ALL-STARS IN ACTION THIS WEEK

Astoria's 13, 14 and 15-yr-old Babe Ruth All-Star teams have been selected and all three teams will participate in Longview's Don Rhoads Memorial Tournament this week.

The Rhoads Tournament features 74 games on eight different fields with three age-group tournaments running simultaneously throughout Cowlitz County.

The tournament begins Thursday, with the Astoria 15-yr-olds taking on perennial power Hazel Dell Metro of Vancouver at 6:00 p.m. on the Kelso High School varsity field at Tam-O-Shanter Park. The 15's will play Beaverton Friday night at 6:00 p.m. at Rister Stadium, the new ballpark at Tam-O-Shanter, then finish pool play Saturday morning with a 9:00 a.m. game against Columbia-Cowlitz, also at Rister Stadium. The top two teams from each 4-team pool will advance to single elimination play with the tournament concluding with championship games Sunday at 3:00 p.m.

Astoria's 14-year-old team, which qualified for regionals the last two years, opens tournament play Friday night at 6:00 p.m. at Roy Morse Field in Longview against Port Angeles. Saturday morning, the 14's face Centralia at 9:00 a.m. then play defending Southern Washington champion Kelso at 2:00 p.m. Both games are at Mark Morris High School.

The 13-year-old Astoria All-Stars also begin the tournament Friday with back-to-back games against Port Angeles and Willamette Valley starting at 3:30 p.m. The 13's finish pool play Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. against Longview. All of the 13-year-old tournament games will be played at Castle Rock High School.

Astoria will field a 13-year-old B team this year which will not participate at this tournament. The team will be coached by Dr. Larry Goza and the roster is still being formulated. Here are the rosters for the Astoria Babe Ruth All-Star Teams:

North Oregon Babe Ruth state tournaments are all scheduled for July 20-24, with Astoria the host site for the 14-year-old tournament. The 13-year-old state tournament is in Ontario with the 15-year-olds playing in La Grande. Regional tournaments are the first week in August with Kelso the host site for the 15-year-old regional, Umpqua Valley hosting the 14-year-old tournament and Pendleton the site for the 13-year-old tourney.
