LOWER COLUMBIA 10's DROP THREE
The Lower Columbia 10-year-old Cal Ripken All-Stars got an early start in tournament play at Western Longview's weekend invitational at John Null Park.
After one rainy practice, the team played games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday against some tough Washington competition.
Led by three returning players from last year's all-star team, the L.C. All-Stars are coached by Naselle's Matt Scrabeck, with assistance from Joel Strange, Todd Tobey and Del Adams.
Scrabeck's son Sam had a great outing on the mound in L.C.'s final game of the tournament on Saturday, tossing six innings with 13 strikeouts as Lower Columbia and Mason County completed regulation tied at 1-1. In a seventh inning tiebreaker, Mason County was able to score the winning run on a bases loaded walk after starting the inning with a runner at second base.
Scrabeck's Naselle Majors teammate Nick Strange also returns from last year's squad and hard-throwing Trevon Morgan of Knappa Blue Majors also played as a 9-year-old on last year's team.
A total of 13 ten-year-olds played on Cal Ripken Majors teams this year indicating a strong youth movement in the area.
Lower Columbia lost its tournament opener 10-3 on Thursday then dropped a 13-1 decision to a tough-hitting Central Longview squad on Saturday. Coach Scrabeck singled out Danny Adams for offensive and Tyson Burnard for defense during the weekend.
The Lower Columbia 10's will look for their first win as a unit on Saturday when they open a tournament at Dallas' La Creole Complex with a game against Upper Rogue at 8:00 a.m., the first of three games on Saturday.
After another tournament at Hoquiam the weekend before July 4th, Lower Columbia will begin state tournament play at Newberg on July 7th. The Cal Ripken 10-and-under regional tournament will be at Ellensburg later in the month.
