STRONG START FOR L.C. 12's
The Lower Columbia Cal Ripken 12-year-old All-Stars won three of their first four games, with a win over the local 11-year-olds and two wins in three contests against Beaverton teams over the weekend.
Coached by Mike Garcia and assisted by Gary Medina and Pat Harber, the Lower Columbia team is comprised of players from Astoria, Lewis & Clark, Warrenton, Knappa, Long Beach and Naselle.
Lewis & Clark's Conor Harber and Knappa's Dalton Kelly are both veterans of last year's 12-year old squad and will be two of the top pitchers. Harber, a fireballing righthander who runs as fast as he throws, will be the top catcher when not on the mound and will also see time at shortstop. Kelly, a big kid with good hands and a strong bat, will play at the corner infield positions when not toeing the slab.
The team features five players from league champion Lewis & Clark, which defeated Long Beach in the championship game.
The 12-year-olds beat the 11-year-olds 9-to-2 in their first game of the summer season, then went to Beaverton for a tripleheader on Saturday. Lower Columbia defeated the Beaverton 12-year-olds 8-to-6, then came out flat in the second game losing 4-to-1 before finishing the day with an 8-4 win over a Beaverton 11-year-old squad.
Long Beach's Ryan Tapio was a standout at the plate, going 5-for-7, also tossing four shutout innings on the mound and playing solid centerfield. Coach Garcia also singled out Naselle's Trevon Leland for his performance at the plate and in the field and said that Conor Harber had a couple of shots to the outfield that would have been home runs had a fence been in place.
The next tournament action for the Lower Columbia 12-year-old All-Stars comes up this week, with a tournament at Western Longview's John Null Park starting Thursday night and continuing through Sunday.
