COMETS CAN'T CATCH V.C., LOSE OPENER
In a game played at Camas High School, Vancouver Christian used a strong double-wing rushing attack to race past Naselle 28-14 in the season opener for both teams.
"They had good team speed," said Comets head coach Robin Andrea. "It took us a half to catch up with them. We were playing better than them by the fourth quarter"
Naselle tacked on a late score using an effective two minute drill but simply ran out of time after a slow start.
Junior quarterback Kyle Burkhalter led the Comets in passing and rushing, topping the 100-yard mark in both departments. Younger freshman brother Austin was Burkhalter's top target, hauling in seven catches in his high school debut. Another freshman, speedy Colton Gilbert showed his game-breaking abiltiy on a 64 yard reception.
Naselle trailed 13-0 at the half, before scoring its first touchdown on a 2-yard run by Austin Burkhalter. On the ensuing kickoff, Vancouver Christian senior M.J. Adams took it 80 yards to the house to give the Light a 21-6 lead.
"Kyle Burkhalter did a good job running the show," said Andrea, whose Comets entertain the Astoria J.V. team Thursday night at Pentilla Field. "Alan Erickson continues to improve at the inside linebacker and started stopping some of their stuff. I was pleased with the way the young group progressed. We'll go back at it and get ready for Astoria."
