FISHERMEN FIRST AT NORTH MARION TOURNEY

Fifth-ranked Astoria defeated 3A power Willamina 25-17 in a single-game championship to take first place at its first tournament of the season.

"It was a good game," said head coach Angee Hunt, whose team is 6-0 in dual matches this season. "We kind of came out fired up from the beginninng and stayed on top to the end."

In nine total games (sets) played, Astoria won seven and lost two. The Lady Fishermen had to fend off three match points to come from 24-21 down to defeat Blanchet 27-25 in the semifinals.

Astoria went 4-2 in pool play, but took second by one point behind Gladstone after splitting a pair of games against the Gladiators 25-23, 22-25. Astoria also split with Blanchet 20-25, 25-13 in pool play before dispatching the 2A Cavaliers in an exciting semifinal game.

Astoria swept Cottage Grove 25-16, 25-12 in their first pool matchup. The Lady Fishermen opened bracket play with a 25-9 dusting of North Marion. Willamina defeated Gladstone 25-8 in the semis before falling to Astoria in the championship.

Astoria has won 25 out of 29 total sets played this year. The Lady Fishermen begin their second run through the Cowapa League with a home game against Seaside Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.

Nestucca Tournament...Nestucca defeated Warrenton 25-17, 27-25 in the championship game. No other details were reported.
