FISHERMEN DEAL KNOCKOUT BLOW TO GULLS

Seaside recorded its first goal in district play, but Astoria countered with a second half goal to earn a 1-1 draw in the matchup of Clatsop County rivals at a soggy field in Warrenton.

The point earned in the standings keeps a faint glimmer of hope alive for Astoria as the Lady Fishermen prepare for their final regular season match against Scappoose. Astoria would need Scappoose to tie or lose to Rainier today to have any chance of unseating the Indians for the fifth and final playoff spot from the district.

The Fishermen had a decided edge in possession in the first half, but Seaside's Cela Sibley got loose on a breakaway and scored, giving the Gulls a 1-0 halftime lead.

Astoria evened the score in the 54th minute, when Hannah Alley found the back of the net off an assist by Charlene Harber. The teams played to a stalemate to the final whistle.

Seaside drops to 0-5-1 in District 1 play and 5-7-1 overall with one game remaining. Astoria, now 0-4-2 and 2-8-3, travels to Scappoose on Tuesday, needing an Indians loss to Rainier in the interim to bypass the Tribe for the fifth district playoff seed.

The top two teams in District 1 earn automatic state qualifying berths, while the next three teams play off for the final state seed. O.E.S., Catlin Gabel, Valley Catholic and Yamhill-Carlton have all clinched postseason berths.
