FISHERMEN TAKE TENTH, BLANK INDIANS

Astoria improved its Cowapa League boys soccer record to a perfect 10-0 with a 2-0 shutout at Scappoose Tuesday night.

Senior midfielder Josimar Macareno got the Fishermen (11-0-1 overall) on the board in the sixth minute off a Brendan Cope assist. Christoph Mundt tallied the second goal ten minutes later after a nice run and pass from Matt Brause.

"We played a lot of kids and a lot of kids out of position," said Astoria assistant coach Gordon Thomsen. "We kind of kept the pressure on them the whole game."

Senior forward Kevin Speer, Astoria's leading scorer in 2005 with 35 points, played two ten minute intervals, returning to the field for the first time since suffering a strained ACL and bone bruise in a Sept. 21 game against Seaside.

"We're finally returning the last pieces to the puzzle," said Thomsen. "It was good to see him running around out there. He looked good."

Astoria returns to the field Monday at Tillamook before hosting Seaside next Wednesday in the final regular season game. Astoria will then be off until Nov. 7 when the Fishermen host a second round state playoff game as the top seed from the Cowapa League.

Scappoose dropped to 2-5-2 in league and 2-7-2 overall.

In other Cowapa League boys soccer action, Yamhill-Carlton blanked Tillamook 2-0, moving the Tigers into second place in the league standings with 13 points (4-5-1). Third place Seaside (11 pts, 3-4-2) hosts Yamhill-Carlton on Thursday in a game that could hold a state playoff berth for the winner.

In girls 3A/4A District One soccer, O.E.S. showed no ill effects from the loss of star forward Jessica Tsao, blanking Yamhill-Carlton 5-0 to regain first place in the District standings. Tsao, a University of Portland recruit, was lost for the season with an ACL tear suffered this weekend in a 4-0 loss to nationally top-ranked Strongsville, Ohio.

Astoria and Seaside's girls meet at the Warrenton Soccer Complex tonight at 6:00 p.m. with the loser likely eliminated from playoff contention. The top five teams from eight in the District go on to the postseason.
