COMETS ROLL TO SECOND STRAIGHT WIN
Kyle Burkhalter's 9-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Ray with eight seconds remaining in the first half gave Naselle the lead. The Comets swarming defense made sure the lead never changed hands again.
The Comets defeated the Tacoma Baptist Crusaders 34-7 at Curtis High School in University Place on Saturday night, giving Naselle its second straight Pacific 2B League win. Now 4-3 overall, the Comets can clinch a .500 season with a win at home over North Beach next week.
Tony Fletcher started the game with a bang, returning the opening kickoff 76 yards for a touchdown, but the celebration didn't last long as Tacoma Baptist returned the favor, taking a 7-6 lead on the extra point. There the lead remained until Burkhalter located Ray in the end zone on the penultimate play of the half.
Naselle, now at full strength with the return of players suspended the first five weeks, was swarming defensively all night. Colton Gilbert had three of the Comets' four sacks and several other players were involved in tackles for loss as Naselle limited the Crusaders to 151 total yards and no offensive points.
"The presence of Jason Gradt was felt by literally all TBS backs and the QB," said Comets head coach Robin Andrea, in pursuit of his first winning season in three years at Naselle. "He put at least one hit on each. Virtually every defensive player played hard, fast and furious."
Kyle Burkhalter and Nick Hines each intercepted passes. Burkhalter rushed for 112 yards and two TD's to go with his TD pass. The Comets will be going for their third straight win on Friday, something they haven't done in five years.
