WARRIORS PICK UP MUCH-NEEDED WIN
In a game that both teams probably had to have to make the playoffs, the Warrenton Warriors came through with a 28-22 home victory over Vernonia to even their league record at 1-1 and improve their overall record to 4-2.
Michael O'Casey's 15 yard touchdown reception of an Eric Gantenbein pass in the fourth quarter put Warrenton in the lead for good as, for the second week in a row, Warrenton traded blows with its opponent throughout the game.
"We were able to run the ball adequately, I think," said Warrenton head coach John Mattila, whose team racked up 224 rushing yards and over 300 yards of offense. Running back Jorge Campos left the game with an injury in the first half after rushing for 55 yards on ten carries and sophomore Beau Torres came on to run 16 times for 57 yards and a touchdown.
"They were stunting every down," said Mattila about the Vernonia defensive front. "So we were handing to the first back in the I."
That meant senior fullback Michael O'Casey carried the load. O'Casey had a season-best 123 yards on 23 carries, scoring on a 3-yard run in the second quarter to put Warrenton up 14-6.
The Warriors had an opportunity to grab an early advantage when Dan Wolfe recovered a Vernonia fumble on the ensuing kickoff, but the Loggers picked off Gantenbein's first down pass and drove down the field to score a tying touchdown on the first of two Byron Schorzman TD passes.
With the teams tied at 14 at the half, Torres ran 22 yards for a Warriors touchdown, giving Warrenton a 20-14 lead in the third period. A failed extra point opened the door for Vernonia to take the lead in the 4th quarter, when sophomore quarterback Byron Schorzman found Jeff Palek in the end zone on an 18-yard pass to tie the score. The Loggers completed a 2-point conversion pass to take a 22-20 lead before the Warriors answered with Gantenbein's toss to O'Casey.
"We were just hanging on in the fourth quarter," said Mattila. The Loggers blocked a Warrenton punt and had a chance to take the lead, but Warrenton's Dallas Moses intercepted a pass in the end zone to preserve the lead. Vernonia had one final possession, but had to drive the length of the field after the Warriors got off a quality punt.
Gantenbein completed 7-of-12 passes for 81 yards on a night when Warrenton kept the ball on the ground for 55 plays. Dan Wolfe caught three balls for 43 yards and also had one of three Warriors interceptions of Schorzman, who threw for 144 yards and a pair of scores.
The Warriors take on the Neah-Kah-Nie Pirates next Friday night.
