ILWACO WATCHES MYERS, ROCKETS, DASH HOMECOMING HOPES

No, there was only one Lucas Myers playing for Castle Rock Friday night as the Rockets invaded Pederson Field for Ilwaco's Homecoming 2006.

One Myers was more than enough for the Rockets. The defending Trico Player of the Year seems to be marching towards more post-season honors as Myers averaged nearly 15 yards per carry and scored six touchdowns as Castle Rock Rockets pulled away from Ilwaco, 47-20 in a Southwest Washington 1A League Trico Division clash Friday evening.

Myers, who has a state-best 27 touchdowns this season, carried the ball 15 times for 221 yards and scored on runs of 50, 11 and 6 yards in the first quarter. He caught an 18-yard scoring pass from QB Clint Burgoyne in the second quarter, and broke into the end zone on runs of 42 and 13 yards in the third quarter.

The Fishermen, fresh off their first Trico Conference win against Columbia last week, found themselves trying to play catch-up against a powerful Rocket offense that showed why they are in the hunt for a conference title and gearing up for a playoff run.

"Castle Rock has some phenomenal athletes and they wanted to put us away early," said Ilwaco Head Coach Ned Bittner. "Our guys hung tough, kept battling, but we needed some breaks to go our way, and that just didn't happen."

The Rockets (6-1, 3-1 league) led 19-0 after the opening period and 33-6 at the break. Zach Varkevisser scored the Rockets' other touchdown on a 34-yard run late in the second quarter. Burgoyne completed half of his 12 passes for 75 yards. One of the defensive sparks for Ilwaco came on a tipped pass that was plucked out of the air by Shane Persinger at the Fishermen 2-yard line int the second quarter. But Ilwaco couldn't move the ball on offense and gave the Rockets great field position setting up the Varkevisser TD.

Ilwaco, now 1-3 in league play, 1-6 overall, scored all three of its touchdowns through the air as Jake Nesbitt hooked up once with Anthony Wirkkala on a deft 5-yard slant, and twice with Matt Kaino, the first on a corner route that Kaino turned into a 41-yard scamper for paydirt in the 2nd quarter. Then Kaino snatched a 36-yard strike from Nesbitt late in the game for the Fishermen's final score. Nesbitt completed 7-of-16 passes for 136 yards and those three TD's, by far his best outing of the season. But the Fishermen running attack never got on track, rushing for only 128 yards, with Eddy Knick picking up 76 on 15 carries. Knick remains 5 yards away from his third consectuive 1,000 yard rushing season. Defensively, game balls went out to Geoff Hylton (three quarterback sacks), Persinger, and Wirkkala, who hopped on a Rocket fumble and broke up several passes on the night.

Ilwaco is on the road next week, taking on Trico Conference leader and #3 ranked Kalama. Pre-game on KAST AM 1370 starts at 6:50 Friday night.
