SEASIDE BLANKS TILLAMOOK, NOW SECOND PLACE
Alec Carlson's scored on a direct free kick late in the first half and the Seaside Seagulls held on to shut out the Tillamook Cheesemakers 1-0 Thursday in Cowapa League boys soccer action at Warrenton.
With the win, the Gulls leapfrogged into second place in the league standings with 11 league points and three games remaining. The top three teams in the 5-team Cowapa League go on to the state tournament, with the 3rd, 4th and 5th place teams playing off for the third seed.
"Tillamook has some fast forwards," said Seagulls head coach John Broderick. "They had some threatening corners in the first half. We had good possessions in the second half. Our guys were winning ball at midfield and doing good things with it."
Seaside currently leads Yamhill-Carlton by a point in the standings, having split a pair of 1-0 games against the Tigers. The two teams play the critical rubber match at Warrenton on Thursday, Oct. 19. The Gulls can assure their fifth consecutive state playoff appearance with a second place finish.
