ASTORIA VOLLEYBALL EARNS SEASIDE SWEEP

The Astoria Lady Fishermen took a major step toward clinching their second Cowapa League championship in three years with a 25-5, 25-16, 25-18.

The win, coupled with Banks' surprising 25-23, 25-18, 25-19 sweep at Tillamook, opened up a two-game gap in the Cowapa League between first-place Astoria (10-1) and the Cheesemakers and Braves with four regular season games remaining.

Astoria's front line of junior outside hitter Sophie DeWitt, senior middle blocker Wendi Agalzoff and junior opposite Kristin Saulsbury combined for 27 kills in the match. Saulsbury added 12 digs and five aces, junior liber Sara Cullen added 13 digs and seven aces and junior Hilary O'Bryan contributed a team-high 14 digs with five service aces. Senior setter Rachel Gascoigne dished out 29 assists as Astoria completed the season sweep of Seaside for the first time in more than a decade.

Astoria will play in another high profile tournament this Saturday, taking part in the Emerald Invitational at Marist High School. For the second weekend in a row, the Lady Fishermen will be pooled with Sisters, with whom they split a pair of games at the Seaside Varsity Invitational. Also in Astoria's pool: 3A powerhouse Santiam Christian and Cascade. Top-ranked 3A Burns will be at the tournament as will North Bend bringing the two defending state 3A players of the year (Burns' Jessica Clemens and North Bend's Kelcy McKenna) to the same tourney. The Fishermen return to Cowapa League action Tuesday at Scappoose, then welcome Tillamook to town Thursday night with an opportunity to clinch the league championship at home.
