VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP-Monday

Astoria def. Banks 25-10, 14-25, 25-18, 24-26, 17-15...After a strong start, the Lady Fishermen survived a 5-game nailbiter at Banks to hold on to first place in the Cowapa League heading into the final stretch of games. "We actually came from behind 13-9 to win it," said Astoria head coach Angee Hunt. "We got some real key defensive plays from Hilary O'Bryan and Sophie DeWitt to keep the ball alive on some real scramble plays that helped us." Astoria, now 9-1 in league and 10-1 overall, hosts Seaside Wednesday night to begin the third and final tour of league games. Second place Tillamook, a four game winner at Yamhill-Carlton Monday night, remains a game back at 8-2. The Braves dropped to 7-3 in league and 8-3 overall. Tillamook visits Astoria on Oct. 19 in a match that should determine the league championship.
Scappoose def. Seaside 15-25, 25-13, 25-23, 25-14...The Seagulls continue to show improvement, winning their first game in Cowapa League play before losing the match to Scappoose. The Gulls have been bolstered by the return of outside hitter Mollie Schmidt (4 kills) and middle blocker Meagan Macomb (2 kils, 6 blocks) from injuries.
