COMETS STRAFE NAVIGATORS IN HOME WIN
The Naselle Comets used big plays and a swarming defense to level the Northwest Christian Navigators 54-6 at Pentilla Field Friday night.
The Navigators, in their first year of varsity football, were no match for the young, but improving Comets.
Nick Hines had three first quarter touchdown runs as Naselle sprinted to a 20-0 lead. Naselle added three more scores, including Hines' fourth of the night, in the second period to mount a 42-0 lead at the half.
Hines finished with 142 yards on just seven carries, while junior quarterback Kyle Burkhalter added 131 yards on five carries, including a 46-yard touchdown sprint to open the second half.
Meanwhile, the Comets' defense limited the Navigators to just two first half first downs, one coming on a penalty.
"The kids just played extremely well defensively," said Comets head coach Robin Andrea. "Mike Shirley and Alan Erickson and Tony Ruch and those guys just swarmed. The whole defense did, but those guys were coming up on the ballcarrier a lot."
The Navigators were down 54-0 late in the third quarter when Jay DeMeyer ran 45 yards for a touchdown on his only carry of the game.
Nick Hines nearly matched Northwest Christian's entire rushing total (71) on one 65-yard touchdown in the first half.
"Our offensive line did very well," said Andrea. "And Nick Hines has improved 100 percent over the last two games in terms of making full speed decisions.
