COWAPA FOOTBALL PREVIEW-Scappoose
HEAD COACH: Sean McNabb (8th year)
McNabb and his stable staff of assistants reload yet again in pursuit of another Cowapa League and state championship.
2005 RECORD: 9-4 (5-0 Cowapa League)
LAST PLAYOFFS:lost to Sherwood 23-7 in state semifinals
LAST LEAGUE TITLE:Indians have won two straight and eight of last nine league titles
LAST PLAYOFF WIN:defeated Sutherlin 21-13 and Central 27-23 in '05
The dynasty continues in 2006, although the Indians have been more vulnerable the last two years with back-to-back four loss seasons. The Tribe made its tenth straight playoff appearance in 2005.
CURRENT COLLEGE/PRO ATHLETES: Derek Anderson (QB, Cleveland Browns), Nathan Hannah (OL-redshirt, OSU), Dan Klobes (DB, redshirt-OSU), Eliot Vinzant (RB, Western Oregon), Cody Feakin (OL, Portland St.), Kyle Kling (DT, Southern Oregon)
KEY GRAUDUATES/LOSSES: Hannah (1st-tm All-state OL and DL, Cowapa League Male Scholar Athlete of the Year, Cowapa co-Defensive Player of the Year), Klobes (1st-tm All-state WR and DB, Cowapa Offensive Player of the Year), Brooks Edwards (WR), Jake Feakin (WR/3rd-team All-state LB), Brooks Edwards (HM All-State WR), John Dudley (HM All-state C)
That's a heck of a lot of talent walking out the door as Klobes and Hannah are among the all-time greats at Scappoose as well as being a couple of positive leaders. However, the Indians are always ready to reload.
RETURNING ALL-STARS:Justin Engstrom (HM All-state QB, 6-5, 210, Sr.), T.J. Crane (all-Cowapa RB, 5-11, 190, Sr.)
RETURNING STARTERS: 4 offense, 4 defense-5 total players
RETURNING LETTERMEN: 40
OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Josh Nelson (OT/DT, 6-2, 215, Sr.), Devon Engstrom (OG/DE, 6-1, 220, Jr.), Cody Hoglund (CB/WR, 5-10, 155, Jr.), Sean Wasson (RB/DB, 5-8, 185, Jr.)
KEY NEWCOMERS: Weston Powers (WR, 5-11, 170, Sr.), Brian Jackson (LB/WR/QB, 6-0, 190, Jr.), Ryland Geiger (RB/LB, 6-1, 200, Jr.)
Not too many teams could graduate two players the caliber of Nathan Hannah and Daniel Klobes and still be ranked number one to start the next season. The Indians year-in and year-out have produced the talent to compete on the state's highest level and this year is no exception. Scappoose's only loss came to now top-ranked Marist at Eugene and the Indians enter Cowapa League play ranked fifth in the state, just below fourth-ranked Astoria.
The newcomer in Yamhill-Carlton may be stealing most of the headlines, but the Indians are pretty happy with their quarterback. Justin Engstrom, now in his third year as starter, has received his fair share of mail from college recruiters and is just the latest in a growing line of quality signalcallers from Columbia County.
While Zach Anderson returns all of his familiar targets, Engstrom is throwing to an entirely new set of receivers this year. One of the most pleasant additions has been senior Wes Powers, who traded in his soccer cleats for football cleats. Powers leads the team in receptions with 37, just one behind Y-C's J.T. Sorenson, and has four touchdown catches. Ryan Wilson and Kevin Carpenter also return to Scappoose's four-wide spread offense corp of receivers.
While teams have dropped defenders out of the box in order to stop Scappoose's passing offense, running back T.J. Crane has been the beneficiary. Crane leads all Cowapa League rushers with 652 yards on 64 carries and has nine touchdowns. Scappoose also returns Sean Wasson, who started at running back early last season. The Indians welcomed a prodigious talent when Ryland Geiger joined the football team. A national champion freestyle wrestler, Geiger is a phenomenal athlete who is still learning the game of football. With plenty of depth on offense, the Indians second team could probably compete for playoffs in some 4A leagues in Oregon.
Defensively, Scappoose has gotten strong play from middle linebacker Caleb Honl (5-8, 170, Sr.) and Crane is a tackling machine at strong safety. Nelson and Engstrom give Scappoose two proven experienced starters on the defensive line. Transfer Brian Jackson and Jacob Francaeur flank Honl giving the Indians perhaps the league's best linebacking corp.
OUTLOOK: Scappoose isn't slipping. The rest of the Cowapa League is just catching up. A playoff berth should be a sure thing for the Indians but they will battle for the league title with Astoria, Y-C and Seaside.
COACH MCNABB SAYS: "We had a good preseason and we're getting better every week. We played some good teams. Cottage Grove and Central were character checks and good games to be in [Scappoose trailed in both games before coming back to win]. We want to be balanced on offense, but we must take what we get. Teams are putting less guys in the box and we've been able to run well."
