IMPROVED EFFORT FOR LADY FISHERMEN

Astoria outplayed Yamhill-Carlton in the second half, but extended its scoreless streak to four games in a 1-0 girls soccer loss to the Tigers on Thursday.

Sophomore midfielder Esther Harder put the Tigers on the board in the 59th minute with a long distance blast from nearly 40 yards out that sailed over the head of Astoria goalkeeper Bug Coggins.

The two teams had played fairly evenly up to that point, but the Tigers seemed to run out of steam late in the match as Astoria had the Yamhill goal under siege in the final ten minutes.

Two free kick opportunities went by the wayside during that stretch. A foul just outside the box had Astoria scrambling to get a quick kick away. Kristina Wilson's shot deflected off a teammate in the box and out of harm's way. Shortly afterwards, another Wilson free kick from the left wing went through the goalkeepers hands into the vicinity of three Astoria players at the far post. Any one of them could have easily punched the ball into the back of the net, but they got in each other's way and could not get a shot off.

Both teams had ten shots on goal and shared possession for the majority of the match. For the second straight outing, Astoria was unable to earn a corner kick, while Yamhill had four corners.

The Lady Fishermen take on defending state champion O.E.S. in Portland on Monday.

In other District 1 girls soccer action...Seaside lost big for the second time this week as Catlin Gabel's Kaethe Selkirk scored four times in a 5-0 victory for the Eagles, O.E.S. cruised past Rainier 8-0 and Valley Catholic thumped Scappoose 5-1
