FISHERMEN OFFENSE STRUGGLES AGAIN
For the third straight match, the Astoria girls soccer team failed to score a goal, falling to Catlin Gabel 2-0 at the Warrenton Soccer Complex on Tuesday.
Injured forward Charlene Harber did play, but was mostly ineffective as the Lady Fishermen continued to flounder when trying to mount attacks.
Catlin's senior forward Kaethe Selkirk beat Astoria's offside trap for a goal in the 32nd minute then added an assist with a beautiful back-pass in the second half for the Eagles two goals.
Catlin outshot Astoria 9-to-4 in the match and had one corner kick to none for the Lady Fishermen.
Bug Coggins made two outstanding saves in the second half to prevent Catlin from adding to its lead, finishing with four saves in the game. The Eagles goalkeeper was not tested, recording two gimme saves in the shutout.
Harber, who injured her hip in a fall against Seaside two weeks ago, sat out nearly the entire first half before entering the game with about five minutes remaining. The sophomore speedster played the majority of the second half, but was clearly limited by the injury and rarely figured into the play.
Astoria, now 2-5-1 overall, will host Yamhill-Carlton on Thursday at 4:15 p.m. Catlin Gabel has won two of its last three matches since beginning the season with a 5-game losing streak.
