GULLS SEE THE LIGHT, EMERGE FROM BASEMENT
Leo Luna's goal in the 35th minute was all the Seaside Seagulls needed to vault from last place in the Cowapa League to a second place tie.
The Gulls defeated the Yamhill-Carlton Tigers 1-0 at Yamhill to improve to 2-3-1 in the league standings and 3-4-1 overall, ending a 4-game winless streak.
"He received a pass from Chris Senick on the right side," said Seaside head coach Jon Broderick of the sophomore Luna's goal. "He beat a defender with a nice move inside the penalty area and passed it past a pretty competent keeper."
Yamhill-Carlton's junior goalkeeper Greg Slater has impressed coaches in the Cowapa League this season, despite the Tigers losing record.
"He is a very aggressive keeper and snuffed most of the easy chances we had," saide Broderick. "We were around the goal quite a bit and had a lot of good looks. We would like to have had more goals, but as we climb out of the basement in the Cowapa League, we're glad to have a win. It's been a long time since we had one."
Seaside has a chance to jump over Scappoose into second place when the Gulls face the Indians on the road Wednesday. Scappoose upset Seaside 2-1 in the teams' first meeting, the first win for Scappoose over Seaside in boys soccer in the history of the two programs. The Indians played to a 1-1 draw with Tillamook Monday.
