GULLS GASH SWEET HOME IN SHUTOUT WIN
Seaside could probably empathize with the Sweet Home Huskies even as they were celebrating their demise on Friday night at Broadway Field.
The Gulls thumped the Huskies 32-0 to improve to 4-1 heading into next Friday night's Cowapa League opening clash against the unbeaten Astoria Fishermen at Astoria.
The Gulls D celebrated its second shutout of the season, but much like Seaside did the previous week in a loss to Newport, the Huskies had ample opportunity to put points on the scoreboard.
Both teams featured balanced offense, with the Huskies rushing and passing for over 100 yards on the night, while the Gulls racked up an impressive 282 yards on the ground on the way to 435 total yards in the victory.
Four turnovers proved to be costly as the Huskies dropped to 2-3 overall. The Valco League's newest member should contend with Central and Newport for the top three spots in a league that currently has no team with a winning record (Central and Newport are both 2-2).
Seaside senior wingback Dennis Olstedt was held to 73 yards rushing, but caught a pair of touchdown passes from Ed Kauffunger, who had a major bounceback game after completing only one pass in a 14-0 loss to Newport. The 6-6, junior lefty completed 6-of-11 passes for 153 yards and had two interceptions.
Kauffunger's 9-yard scoring toss to Olstedt got the Gulls on the board in the first quarter. Seaside blew the game open in the second period, scoring three times.
Senior halfback Will Beatty, who had a career-best 130 yards on 16 carries, scored the first of his three touchdowns on a 3-yard run. Later in the quarter, Kauffunger found Dennis Olstedt for the second time, connecting on a 39-yard touchdown pass. Olstedt was Kauffunger's favorite target on the night, catching four passes for 95 yards.
Beatty capped the half with a 2-yard scoring run to give the Gulls a commanding 25-0 lead at intermission.
The Gulls defense bent, but did not break, intercepting Huskies quarterback Kyle Pettit once and pouncing on three fumbles, including a bad snap that sailed over the head of the Sweet Home punter.
Beatty tallied the final score of the game, busting loose for a 35-yard touchdown run.
Unlike the Valco League, the Cowapa League looks to be loaded this year as Seaside, Scappoose and Yamhill-Carlton enter league play with just one loss and Astoria enters the league season undefeated.
