WEEKEND ROUNDUP

GIRLS SOCCER
Montesano 3, Astoria 0...Kendra Matthews scored two goals and had an assist on a corner kick as the Bulldogs dominated the Lady Fishermen Saturday at Warrenton. Astoria, now 2-4-1 overall, begins district play at home Tuesday at 4:15 p.m. against struggling Catlin Gabel.

CROSS COUNTRY
Puma Classic Invitational at Drake Park in Bend...Astoria's boys placed 12th and girls 15th in the varsity division. Mike Pounders finished 16th in the boys race in 17:34. Darrick Waugh of Henley won the race in 16:28 and Sheldon placed first in team points with 114. Tillamook was sixth with 211 and Astoria had 304 points. In the girls race, Molalla took the team title with 84 points and the Indians' Lauren Loutzenhise took first overall in 19:25. Astoria was led by Bridget Nurding's 61st place finish (23:16).
Bearcat Activators Invitational at Stan Hedwall Park in Chehalis...Renton placed four of the top five boys finishers to score a first place 25 and also took the girls team title with 42 points. Ilwaco's Kelly Freese finished second overall in 19:35, 44 seconds behind Centralia's Torin Shriver. Stephen Berglund paced the Fishermen boys with a 14th place finish in 16:56. Grant Fujii of Renton won the race in 16:07. Ilwaco scored 233 points to take 10th in the boys race.

VOLLEYBALL
Raymond Tournament...Ilwaco won two and lost five games during pool play before falling to Taholah 26-24, 25-23 in its bracket play opener.

FOOTBALL
Willapa Valley 46, Naselle 20...Rick Bannish returned a kick and a punt for touchdowns in the second quarter as the Vikings defeated the Comets on homecoming night in Menlo Friday night.
