WARRIORS RUMBLE PAST KNAPPA
These may be non-league games for Warrenton and Knappa, but it sure seems like the old Northwest League is in full swing.
Having already played Corbett and Portland Christian, the Warriors faced their most familiar rivals from the NWL Friday night and handed the visiting Knappa Loggers a sound 34-0 beating in the first annual Non-League Rumble On The River.
The Warriors held the Loggers under 100 yards for the night and kept Knappa off the scoreboard, improving to 3-1 heading into their Lewis & Clark League opener at Clatskanie next Friday. Knappa, now 1-4, also opens league play on the road, travelling to Corbett.
Knappa averaged a yard and a half per carry, keeping the ball on the ground for all, but three plays in the game. The Loggers were able to defend the run fairly well, holding Warrenton to less than four yards per carry, but record-setting quarterback Eric Gantenbein had his most productive day of the season, passing for 227 yards and a pair of short touchdowns.
When Gantenbein throws, he usually airs it out deep down the field, but the Warriors scored a pair of touchdowns in the first half on short tosses to Michael O'Casey in the first quarter and Dallas Moses in the second. The rest of Gantenbein's six completions went for an average of 35 yards as Warriors' receivers Moses (3 catches for 93 yards, Dan Wolfe (2-52), Brandon Garcia (1-43) and O'Casey (2-33) repeatedly beat the Loggers' secondary down the field.
Meanwhile, the Loggers offense plodded, with primary weapon Steven Bokor limited to 22 yards on 14 carries. Beau Torres came off the bench in the second half with Warrenton comfortably in front to lead the Warriors with 32 yards on six carries.
All five of Knappa's non-league games so far have been against 3A teams from the Lewis & Clark League, all but four of which are former Northwest League rivals. While both teams begin league play on Friday, Knappa has one final non-league game on the schedule, closing the season on Friday, 11/3 at Chemawa against the 3A Braves from the new PacWest Conference.
