ILWACO DOUBLED TO THE GROUND
It was a rough night for the Ilwaco Fishermen defensively. And the offense couldn't match La Center Friday night at Peterson Field as the Wildcats ran their Trico Conference record to 3-0 with a convincing 49-8 victory over Ilwaco.
Led by a ground attack that featured Emanuel Mendez, La Center amassed over 440 yards on the ground, running over and through a Fishermen defense that seemed to be one player short all evening long.
Coming off last week's narrow loss and inspired play in a tough loss to Ridgefield, the Fishermen took the opening kickoff and quickly moved the ball toward midfield only to have their drive stall. After a short punt by Jordan DeSimone put La Center on their own 21-yard line, it took all of one play for the Wildcats to put up their first score and a lead they would never relinquish, as Mendez scampered 79 yards on his first touch of the night and a La Center 7-0 lead.
The Ilwaco offense never got on track, as Trico Conference Offensive Player of the Year Candidate Eddy Knick never had a run of over 6 yards on the night and finished well below his game average with 53 yards on 11 carries. The Fishermen offense garnered only 117 yards in total offense on the night.
La Center's Double Wing offense was clicking on all cylinders, however, as the Wildcats amassed a 29-0 halftime lead which grew to 41-0, before giving up any points to the Fishermen. It was also a balanced attack, as the Wildcats had 7 different players score touchdowns in the contest. Alex Martin got the goose-egg off the scoreboard for Ilwaco with a one-yard plunge late in the game.
Ilwaco next travels to White Salmon to take on Columbia High School in search of their first win of the Trico Conference season and the 2006 campaign as a whole. The game can be heard on KAST 1370 AM Friday night starting at 6:50 pm.
