GULLS MAULED IN DISTRICT OPENER
The Yamhill-Carlton Tigers girls soccer team may have suprised a few people yesterday.
The Tigers, new to the Cowapa League and not expected to contend in District 1, jumped all over Seaside early in yesterday's distict opening match on the way to a 4-0 shutout victory over Seaside.
Coming off consecutive losses to Catlin Gabel and Valley Catholic, the Tigers jumped ahead when freshman forward Talia Prosser received a pass from her sister, junior Tara Prosser and scored in the third minute. The elder Prosser converted a penalty kick later in the half after being fouled in the penalty box, then added two more second half goals for a hat trick.
"We played strong the last two games even though we didn't score," said Yamhill-Carlton co-head coach Bob Harder, who singled out the return of sophomore midfielder Esther Harder, an all-league midfielder last year as a freshman, as a key to Yamhill's resurgent offense.
"Esther missed three games with a knee injury. She helps us a lot on the distribution end. We were competitive with Catlin and Valley Catholic, but we couldn't get the ball to our forwards."
Yamhill-Carlton dominated the match, as Seaside rarely threatened the Tigers goal in falling to 0-1 in District 1 and 5-3 overall. Yamhill improved to 3-4-0 overall.
Gulls head coach Dave Rouse was succinct in his assessment.
"We didn't play well."
The Gulls travel to Catlin Gabel for their next match at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday.
In other District 1 soccer action...both Oregon Episcopal and Valley Cathlolic, the two district favorites, breezed to district opening wins. Defending state champion O.E.S. blasted Scappoose 7-0 and Valley Catholic dusted Rainier 10-0. The Aardvarks defeated the Valiants 2-1 in a non-league match last week. The district rematch is scheduled for Oct. 20 at O.E.S.
