FISHERMEN GIRLS TAKE FIRST AT YAMHILL
The Astoria girls cross country team, led by Maia Donachy's second place finish, took first at the 5-team Yamhill-Carlton Invitational meet Tuesday.
Donachy finished in 24:33 as the Lady Fishermen collected 22 points, edging second place Gladstone (38 points). Yamhill-Cartlon, Estacada and Willamina ran with incomplete teams and did not score. Astoria won despite missing its top two runners, Bridget Nurding (strep throat) and Eva Miehe (leg injury).
"The rest of the gang did really well," said head coach Spencer Barker. "Andrea [Kerns, third place, 24:38] is just blossoming right now. She's becoming a real force in the Cowapa League and we're excited about that."
Right behind Kerns was freshman Camilla Swertloff, who place fourth in 24:50.
"We're really excited about our girls and their chances to get to state," said Barker. "When we field a full and healthy team we think we'll be able to compete in the Cowapa League.
Skyler Butenshon set a personal 5K best with a time of 18:11 to place 11th for the Astoria boys, who finished third with 67 points behind Estacada (21) and Gladstone (64)
Two Astoria runners came in right behind Butenshon, with Ross McDougall (12th,18:27) and Josh Banta (13th, 18:39) also setting personal bests.
Astoria was on pace for a much better showing in the boys race until Mike Pounders was disqualified for going off course.
"He got lost out on the course and he was leading the race by at least thirty seconds at the time," said Barker. "One of the race officials out on the course pointed him the wrong way on accident, then turned around and disqualified him."
Next up for Astoria is the Nike/Jim Danner Invitational this Saturday at Blue Lake Park in the Fairview neighborhood east of Portland.
"It'll have four of the top ten teams in the nation," said Barker. "Teams coming from as far away as Japan. A big day in the world of cross country."
The race features over 100 teams and 3000 runners, including top-ranked 6A Central Catholic and Ferris High School of Spokane, Washington, the top-ranked boys cross country team in the country.
