COWAPA FOOTBALL PREVIEW-Yamhill-Carlton
HEAD COACH: Alan Boschma (2nd year)
Winless two years ago, Boschma led the Tigers to the playoffs in his first season in '05. This year the Tigers are gunning for a league championship. They'd be a virtual lock in the Valco, but a playoff berth is no guarantee in a competitive Cowapa League.
2005 RECORD: 5-6 (3-2 Valco League 2nd place)
LAST PLAYOFFS:beat Brookings-Harbor 33-28, lost in 2nd rd. at La Grande 26-15
LAST LEAGUE TITLE: 1993 (Valco League)-lost to Silverton 31-0 in opening round
Last year's team broke 6-year playoff drought with first playoff win since 1971 team went to championship. Anticipation is high for a special season in wine country.
CURRENT COLLEGE/PRO ATHLETES: none
KEY GRAUDUATES/LOSSES: Cole Morgan (all-Valco RB, Shrine game participant)
Yes, the Tigers do have to run the ball sometimes and Morgan will be missed. Zach Anderson's basketball teammate Jake Williams used to provide an imposing 6-8 target on the football field, but quit football early last season.
RETURNING ALL-STARS:Zach Anderson (HM all-state QB, 6-4, 215, Sr.), J.T. Sorenson (HM all-state WR/OLB, 5-11, 190, Sr.), Tony Perry (all-Valco DB/TE, 6-3, 180, Sr.), Cody Echauri (2nd-team all-Valco OL, 6-0, 235, Sr.)
RETURNING STARTERS: 10 offense, 10 defense-14 total players
RETURNING LETTERMEN: 19
KEY NEWCOMERS: Preston Cooper (SS, 5-8, 155, Sr.)
The Tigers have the most returning starters in the league and the Cowapa League's marquee player in a season of stars.
Zach Anderson is The Oregonian's poster boy as the tall righthanded QB has begun his fourth year as a starter with a flourish, threatening former Beaverton QB Taylor Barton's state record for touchdowns passes in a season. Anderson has 23 touchdown tosses through five games and has passed for over 1300 yards in leading the Tigers to a 4-1 start. Oregon State, Oregon and Boise State are among Anderson's many college suitors.
You can't have a good quarterback without good receivers and J.T. Sorenson leads all Cowapa League pass-catchers with 38 grabs for 578 yards and seven touchdowns. Tight end Tony Perry has been the top red zone target with ten touchdown receptions. Not to be overlooked, the diminutive Willie Webb (5-8, 140, Jr.) has rushed for over 400 yards putting him among the league leaders entering tonight's week five matchup with Banks.
No question, Yamhill-Carlton will light up the scoreboard this year. But will the Tigers be able to get enough defensive stops to put them in the top three of the league. Newport gashed Y-C in a 40-21 win last Friday, and also held Anderson to his least productive game of the year. Undoubtedly, coaches McNabb, Rub and Foust will be poring over the game tape looking for ways to grab the Tigers by the tail. The return of Kyle Bansen (MLB, 6-0, 225, Jr.) from a hand injury this week will give the defense a boost. Sorenson is a ball-hawk at outside linebacker.
OUTLOOK: Ozzie could come calling again this year as the race between Y-C and the other Cowapa League contenders is too close to call. Cowapa League coaches predict Yamhill and Seaside to finish tied for third.
COACH BOSCHMA SAYS: "If we can get healthy, that's our biggest concern. We're not very big and we're somewhat limited in what we can do. If we can keep our offense on the field and our defense off, the end results should be positive. The support here is tremendous. We get to experience some of the old "Hoosiers" stuff. Win or lose it's the same support."
