LOGGERS SHOCK CARDINALS IN LEAGUE OPENER
The Knappa Loggers picked up one of the biggest upsets of the year, knocking off the defending Northwest League co-champion Corbett Cardinals 22-17 at Corbett Friday to open league play with a huge win.
Mike Fulton led a potent ground attack for Knappa with 195 yards on 23 carries with a pair of touchdowns. The Loggers gained 284 yards on the ground and 297 total yards, limiting Corbett to 76 yards rushing.
"Our defense toughened up," said Loggers head coach Aaron Thornton. "We stopped the run pretty good but they were throwing on us."
The Loggers took a 22-10 lead in the fourth quarter then held on as Corbett blocked a punt and scored shortly thereafter to cut the lead to five before recovering a Knappa fumble near midfield. After converting on fourth down and 15, the Cardinals drive stalled inside the red zone when a fourth down pass was batted down near the goal line.
"They were picking us apart," said Thornton, who replaced Darrell Ferguson as head coach shortly before preseason practices began in August. "They were throwing the ball on every down. It started raining a little bit so they were having trouble with the snaps and throwing the ball. They got inside the 20, but we held them and ran out the clock."
The Loggers improved to 2-4 with the win, dropping Corbett's overall record to 2-4. Knappa hosts Nestucca on Friday and could practically ensure a state playoff berth with a victory over the Bobcats, who defeated Gaston 24-8. The Cardinals travel to play Portland Christian, which stayed unbeaten with a 58-0 nonleague win over Chemawa.
