THE ROAD BEST TRAVELED FOR ILWACO

When the 2006 campaign began for the Ilwaco Fishermen, aspirations were to repeat a trip to the post-season after advancing to the Class 1A playoffs in 2005. But the Ilwaco football team began this season with five consecutive losses. That made 10 straight setbacks overall, dating back to last year.

But that "Streak" is over.

The Fishermen pushed their 2006 futility aside by man-handling Columbia High School of White Salmon, 48-27, in a Southwest Washington 1A League Trico Division game.

Fisherman running backs Eddy Knick (19 carries, 193 yards rushing, three touchdowns) and Alex Martin (13 carries, 97 yards, two TDs) helped lead Ilwaco to the much-needed victory.

Ilwaco's defense, led by senior defensive end Geoff Hylton who recovered two fumbles, helped the Fishermen get off to a good start as they forced the Bruins to punt after going three-and-out on their first possession.

Ilwaco didn't need to wait long to get their first score as Martin took a handoff from quarterback Jacob Nesbitt and broke several tackles on his way to an impressive 24-yard touchdown scramble. The three-play, 46-yard drive took just 33 seconds, and Ilwaco led 6-0 with 9:46 left in the first quarter. Ilwaco went up 12-0 after the Bruins fumbled the kickoff, and it was recovered by the Fishermen at the Bruins' 46. Five plays later, Knick rambled into the end zone on a 9-yard run around the left side with 7:57 left in the first.

Knick, who is fast approaching his 3rd consecutive 1,000 yard season, scored again on a 1-yard TD plunge to help Ilwaco go up 18-6 before the 1st quarter horn sounded. That drive started on the Columbia 27 yard line after Martin brought back the Bruin kickoff 67 yards on a sparkling return. Martin added a 1-yard TD burst in the second, and Nick Morrison rambled into the end zone from 2 yards out as the Fishermen took a commanding 34-12 halftime lead.

Ilwaco went up 48-12 after three quarters as Knick had a 2-yard TD run and Nesbitt connected with Anthony Wirkkala on a 3-yard TD pass.

The defense also dominated the game, recovering 5 fumbles and picking off Bruin Sophomore QB Andy Pate in the process, putting the Fishermen offense in superior field postion most of the night.

Ilwaco totaled 315 yards of offense and the Bruins had 285. Ilwaco runs their Trico Conference record to 1-2 and 1-5 overall. Columbia drops to 1-3 in the Trico and 2-4 overall. Ilwaco next plays a strong Castle Rock squad at Peterson Field in Homecoming this Friday night. Join the broadcast with the pregame at 6:45 pm on KAST 1370 AM.
