FISHERMEN CINCH DISTRICT TITLE WITH SEASIDE WIN

With four regular season games in the boys soccer season remaining, Astoria can already make postseason plans.

Although it seemed a foregone conclusion much earlier, it became official yesterday when Astoria defeated Seaside 3-0, giving Astoria an unsurmountable 24 points in district play with an 8-0-0 record.

Kyle McMullen put the Fishermen on the board in the first half, receiving a beautiful backheel pass from Christoph Mundt. Mundt would score a goal of his own while McMullen bulged the onion bag for a second goal before halftime.

Astoria only took six shots on goal in the first 40 minutes, but scored on half of them, then preserved the shutout with a strong defensive performance in the second half.

The Gulls and Fishermen will meet a final time on Oct. 25, then Astoria has nearly two weeks off, including a first round bye in the state tournament, before hosting a playoff game on Tuesday, Nov. 7 against a #3-seed from the Sky-Em or Skyline League.
If all goes well, Astoria should have injured forward K.J. Speer and goalkeeper Gabe Davis back in the lineup in time for the playoffs.

Astoria's next game is against Yamhill-Carlton Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at the Warrenton Soccer Complex.
