FISHERMEN, WHEALDON TAKE DISTRICT BOYS GOLF TITLE
Ilwaco's Jack Whealdon held off a strong challenge from Montesano's Justin Allenbaugh to win the 2006 1A District 4 Golf Championship at Longview's Three Rivers Golf Course on Wednesday, leading the Fishermen to the team title.
Whealdon, who shot a 3-under 141 over two days and 36 holes, will head to the state tournament in May with a district medal, likely joined by teammate Todd Oakes, who finished in 4th place (154).
Final district allocations to state will not be announced until the spring, prior to the tournament.
Ilwaco finished with 71 team points, calculated by awarding points for the top 20 individual places. La Center was runner-up with 62 points, followed by Montesano (48), Stevenson (36) and Rochester (5).
Allenbaugh, who trailed Whealdon by three strokes entering Wednesday's final round, shot two eagles on the first five holes to momentarily claim the individual lead.
"Jack double-bogeyed number two and Justin took the lead," said head coach Dan Whealdon. "Jack birdied five, six and seven on the front then held that lead on the back. It was a lot of fun to watch."
Tyler Johnson also made the cut, firing a 167 to place eighth and freshman Tanner Bonawitz whot a 187 for 12th place. Both players will wait for the WIAA to decide the cutoff for state qualifiers from District 4.
In Washington, full teams do not qualify for state, qualifiers are determined by a cutoff of individual scores at the district level and team scores are an aggregate of their performances at the state tournament. The 2007 state tournament will be played at North Bellingham Golf Course on May 22-23, with allocations expected to be announced sometime in March. Overlake High School of Bellevue is the defending team champion.
Ilwaco will play an abbreviated spring schedule against local Oregon teams like Astoria and Seaside in preparation for the state tournament.
