HOLY SPLIT, BATMAN! ASTORIA BOYS WIN THRILLER, GIRLS FALL

The OSAA Endowment Basketball games at the Brickhouse had a little of everything: dominating defense, stellar individual performances, disappointment, and a spine-tingling finish.

The Astoria Fishermen and Knappa Loggers renewed their Highway 30 rivalry with a split Tuesday night, the Lady Loggers sweeping past Astoria, 48-34, while the Astoria Fishermen stole a victory away from Knappa in the nightcap, 56-55.

Knappa's girl's led from start to finish in the opener, holding the Lady Fishermen offense at bay, while building a lead to as many as 24 points in the second half. Astoria had difficulty handling the pressure that Knappa put on the point, and the resulting 20 turnovers by the Lady Fishermen, along with shooting in the low 20's from the field, destined Astoria to fall yet again to the Lady Loggers, who ran their record to 3-0 with the win. Astoria dropped to 0-2 on the young season.

Leading the Knappa scoring attack was Rachele Schuyler and Brittany Dugan, who each contributed 8 points. Christina Wilson notched another strong defensive effort for Astoria, along with pouring in a game-high 13 points to lead all scorers. Astoria is still missing several starting players due to injury and disciplinary issues, but Knappa just had too much firepower and defensive pressure for the over-matched Fishermen.

In the boy's contest, Astoria tried several times to run away and hide from Knappa, but the steady Loggers just kept grinding and had a chance to win the game. But Jordan Poyer stole a pass intended for Ryan Isom with 6 seconds left, dribbled out the clock, and secured the 1 point victory for the Fishermen.

Astoria led the entire game, after Knappa grabbed 4-2 lead in the 1st quarter. The Fishermen, led by the 3-point dead-eye shooting of Tony Robinson, jumped out to a 23-14 1st quarter lead.
The Loggers came storming back, closing the gap to just three, at 32-29 by the half, behind the solid play of Senior Brian Riffe, who finished the game as the leading scorer with 15 points.

The Fishermen battled back, using their suffocating half court and full court press on Knappa, causing turnovers and bad passes, on their way to a 50-40 lead after three quarters. But the visiting Loggers turned the tables once again, fighting their way to pull even, then take the lead with just over a minute left in the game, 55-54, on a pair of Gary Aho free throws.

Enter Poyer.

The sleek sophomore nailed a running jumper in the lane with just under 30 seconds left in the contest, but it took his last second heroics to seal the first victory of the season for Astoria with the steal as Knappa was working for the last shot of the game.

Astoria moves to 1-2 on the season, Knappa drops to 1-1 on the year.
