LADY FISHERMEN EXCISE DEMONS IN PRESEASON WIN
Calling it the likely the "biggest win since I took over the program", Gordon Thompson and his Astoria Lady Fishermen kept the good times rolling with another tight defensive effort in sneaking past Seaside in the Cowapa League Preseason Tournament last night at the Brickhouse, 39-36.
With the 4th win in a row for Astoria, their longest streak dating back three years, balance was again the key. And controlling the tempo.
"Seaside is a really strong team, and with (Marla) Olstedt and (Ashley) Mayfield, they present some problems," Thompson said after the win. "I don't think there's a coach anywhere who wouldn't want those two on their team. But our girl's played well enough to win, and I'll take it."
No team led by more than 4 points throughout the contest, with Seaside, behind 1o first half points by Olstedt, finding very little room to operate against a stiff Fishermen defense, as Astoria held the advantage at the break 21-19. Olstedt picked up her fourth foul early in the second half and Seaside coach Mike Jacobson was forced to sit his backcourt phenom for most of the second half.
Both teams see-sawed in the final two quarters, with Sara Cullen spotting for a pair of open jumpers and Jamie Coggins battling down low against Megan Potter and Tessa Pfund. Kristen Saulsbury, seeing more action in just her third game of the season, played solid minutes for Coach Thompson, and allowed for a tighter rotation than what the Fishermen normally excecute.
The game came down the the final possession for Seaside, who took the ball in with 36.5 seconds left in the game and Astoria up, 38-36. Mayfield looked for Olstedt cutting on the right wing, but Jennifer Stephens, who had a scary moment in the first half when she collided with Olstedt and smacked her head on the Brickhouse floor which caused play to be stopped for about 5 minutes, stepped in front of the pass with just over 12 seconds to play. Hillary O'Bryan made one of two at the line after being fouled, and a desperation three was far short, allowing the Fishermen to escape with the win.
No Astoria player scored in double figures, but were led by Stephens and Saulsbury with 8 points apiece, Coggins added 7, Cullen chipped in 6. Olstedt led the Gull with 12, backed by Mayfield with 8. Astoria is now 8-5 on the season, Seaside drops to 7-6.
Next up for the Lady Fishermen, Tillamook on Wednesday night, gametime on KAST 1370 AM is 7:05 with the Coaches Show. Seaside waits for the rest of the Cowapa Preseason Tournment to finish before finding out who they'll play at Linfield on Monday.
