LATE RALLY LEADS NESTUCCA PAST WARRENTON

For the second consecutive game, a Warrenton baseball game featured a 6-run, sixth inning comeback rally, although this time it was the Nestucca Bobcats wearing the rally caps.

Tyler Richwine's 3-run home run broke a 5-all tie in the sixth inning as the Bobcats scored eight unanswered runs to come from behind and beat the Warriors 8-5 in a non-league game at Cloverdale Tuesday.

The loss was Warrenton's first of the season after five consecutive victories, while the Bobcats recorded their sixth straight win to improve to 9-1 on the season.

With Warrenton leading 5-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning, the Bobcats began to figure out Warrior starting pitcher Michael Moore. The junior lefty earned the start after a strong relief stint in Friday's win over Seaside and breezed through the first two innings, working out of a 2-on, none out jam in the third. Then came the fourth inning, when the Bobcats lineup got its second turn in the box.

"They started to hit him hard," said Warriors head coach Lennie Wolfe.

The Bobcats opened the inning with three straight hits to score two runs. An error and another base hit loaded the bases. With two outs, Wolfe went to the bullpen, summoning Eric Gantenbein, who got ahead of leadoff hitter Tony Marin with two strikes. On a 2-2 pitcher, Marin hit a bleeder to the right side just out the reach of Warrenton second baseman Buddy Davis to bring home two runs.

"What can you do?" said Wolfe. "The kid makes a great pitch and he hits one 110 feet past the second baseman. He pitched well enough to get us out of there."

With a new ballgame, Bobcats head coach Ron Kellow turned to his ace, son Logan Kellow to take over for starter Charlie Sutton in the fifth inning.

The Warriors plated two in the first off Sutton on a 2-run home run to right-center field by Bubba Massey, scoring Davis, who reached on a 1-out single. One inning later, the Warriors added two runs when Dan Wolfe 2-out fly ball to right field was dropped for an error, scoring Kevin and Michael Moore. Gantenbein opened the third with a single, went to third base on a well-executed hit-and-run by Massey and scored on Billy Sturgell's sacrifice fly to put the Warriors up 5-0.

"We didn't do much against [Kellow]," said Wolfe. "I expect they will do very well in their league and the Kellow kid will be one of the best pitchers in the state. We hit well before he came in, but we just couldn't put anything together to finish the deal."

The Bobcats got one hit in the fifth inning off Gantenbein, then the sixth inning got rough. A walk and two straight hits from the bottom third of the Nestucca order pushed the tying run across. With runners on first and second, the lefthanded batting Richwine stroked a line drive home run to right field for the deciding runs.

"They made good adjustments," said Wolfe. They tried to put the ball in play and not do anything special with it. Then the kid got the big hit."

"We could have done little things here and there a little better."

The Warriors have made a late addition to their schedule and will face the Ilwaco Fishermen at Huddleston Field at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. Lewis & Clark League play begins next Tuesday at Vernonia.
